Lowriderz are back at it with another smasher of an EP and if you thought their previous ‘Jungle Wars’ EP from 2018 was good, then open your ears and get ready to one foot skank all over again. Released everywhere on 12th June, this collection of beats is nothing short of a welcome return to the world of Serial Killaz.

‘Back’ is one dangerous lead to this EP that would no doubt take anything in its path and give it a good bashing. You know the vocal sample already and wrapping this around a single sine wave is the perfect complement alongside the regular breakbeat switches. 

Distant Future and Steppa Style link up for the ride on ‘Dub Stye’ and ‘No Shop Talk’ respectively. Both feature heavy ‘96 influences with pitch bent basslines, tons of vocal shots and bubbling beats that will have you sticking flyers from the past all over your bedroom, flicking up a lighter and trying to invent a time machine.

‘Dubplate’ and ‘Stop’ could have been a double A side release and their stark variations compliment each other perfectly. On one hand you have a tough roller with a singalong style riff. The flip, more of a flexed out riddim, however, both contain that all important Serial Killaz element. Original roots and foundation.

The flavour for 2020 is without a doubt full circle from the mid 90’s and if Lowriderz have anything to do with it, long may it continue.

After thirteen years and over ninety releases, Med School has stacked the chairs and closed its doors. As a final farewell to the label, the ‘Med School: Graduation’ compilation celebrates the life of Hospital Records’ once sister label, as well as the musicians and culture that defined it, with 23 brand new tracks from label stalwarts such as Bop, Keeno, Etherwood and Whiney as well as the new blood that was always so important to the label’s experimental output.

In Med School fashion, the album brings together a myriad of drum & bass stylings and beyond. From the microfunk movements of Bop to Illexandra’s warped emergency warnings, Lakeway’s upfront grime beats to the unique electronic musings of Frederic Robinson, A.Fruit and Kimyan Law.

Representing the serene side of Med School is Etherwood’s ‘Nowhere To Go But Everywhere’, alongside beautiful contributions from Keeno, Natus and Polaris. The tribal infusions of Royalston’s stepper ‘Mark’s Shibari Groove’ and Lung’s techno-fused rabbit hole ‘Stop Crying’ switch up the pace to reflect the breadth of Med School’s outputs. The compilation also calls back to the very beginnings of the label with a special VIP treatment of S.P.Y’s first release in the Hospital camp, MEDIC1 ‘Black Flag’.

Whiney not only brings in his deep new stepper ‘Close To You’ but is also the man behind the continuous mix on the album, seamlessly bringing together all 23 tracks for one final salute to Med School Music.

Noisia Radio S06E27

Aiwaska continues his fine run of recent form with a new EP on the Magician On Duty label, that includes the stunning vocals of TYPIFŸ. It features a pair of red hot new singles with a remix from Zuma Dionys and various versions. 

Noir is a darkly alluring deep house tune with swirling pads. It has shadowy vocals to add to the moody vibe and synths that ring out of the grooves with real menace next to big riffs. There is an instrumental as well as a Dream Version that is more pillowy, laced up with pads and heady chords. 

Dune is a nine minute epic that has a twisted lead synth line and bass that rumbles down low. It works your mind into a lather then layers up the melodies with another fantastic vocal that emerges like a spirit. The whole thing is perfectly atmospheric. Zuma Dionys remxies and slows things down to a heavy, bass driven rework that has lithe synths and plenty of arching chords.
