In this week’s “Label Spotlight Mix,” take a 90-minute journey through the archives of @superspicyrecords. Another label that I believe more people should know about because they're consistently putting out blazing disco and house tracks!

Super Spicy Records is a "Funk & Disco, Originals and Edits" label located in Mexico City, Mexico. Discogs has this to say about them "Super Spicy is a Mexican label founded on 22 December 2019 and helmed by Monsieur Von Pratt."

Stepping up as our penultimate guest mix for the mixtapes of 2022, we have London based duo Collective Groove. 

The boys have been making movements on the scene over the last year or so with their renowned radio show 'That Disco Groove' which has seen them host a stellar roster since its inception.  The shows see's them pick the best new releases from the multiple sub-genres of disco and disco-house followed by an hour long exclusive guest-mix from some of the finest DJ's & Producers on the scene right now

Evil Smarty is known for a string of respected productions and has released chart topping releases on a variety of labels including Midnight Riot, Disco Fruit, Masterworks Music and Wall of Fame. With worldwide support from tastemakers and DJ’s including the likes of David Morales, Greg Wilson and Late Nite Tuff Guy his dancefloor friendly tracks always hit the mark.

As a resident for Shade Disco, Evil Smarty has supported The Shapeshifters, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Dr Packer, Michael Gray, Hifi Sean and many more, show-casing his versatility and talent to keep hands in the air and bodies moving until the early hours. 

Along with Paul Groves, Evil Smarty is part of DJ duo and Club night Project Bango. I crammed twenty tracks into the first hour of this episode, swinging wildly around the BPMs as usual with some promos, some oldies and a bit of hip hop. In hour 2 I was pleased to welcome Burnout Sumner from Berlin for a beautifully eclectic guest mix…

For the past ten years Norman (DJ alias Burnout Sumner, a nod to one of his all-time heroes) has been a vital part of Berlin’s music scene, mainly as a blogger, music journalist, via a communication agency focussed on artists and also as a passionate attendee of clubs and gigs. Over the course of this time he got himself a huge collection of tunes and records and his alter ego Burnout Sumner is his attempt to share it with the world and celebrate the life-affirming communal power of the dancefloor.
His mixes are always up for surprises and notoriously take genre-hopping detours where oldschool tracks can exist right next to brand new ones as well as underground goodies are officially allowed to hold hands with all-time classic hits. For Burnout Sumner, a good DJ set always calls for a few proper pop moments to resonate with the audience. As a curator he’s open to all sorts of genres, as DJ he’s mostly focussing on soulful house music and retro-driven 90s rave vibes, he also shares a deep love for other grooving genres from funk to hi-energy.

"Boca Na Água" emerges as a connecting point between Brazilian culture and the current electronic music scene. The track, already tested on major stages such as Ritual Stage at Surreal Park, B.O.M.A, Colmeia at Green Valley, Tetto Rooftop, and others, features excerpts from the iconic Rita Lee, a figure who transformed Brazilian music since the late 1970s.

The vocals, rescued from "Mania de Você" (1979), bear the mark of a time when Rita expanded her aesthetic, approaching pop and disco, without abandoning the boldness that made her famous. By inserting it into an electronic context, the production not only pays homage but also reopens this gesture of rupture and freedom.

The result is a track that escapes predictability: Brazilian in essence, global in reach. "Boca Na Água" asserts itself as a work that doesn't repeat formulas, but rather clearly weaves memory and the present.
