The Grey Area mix is a collection of celebral minimalism from which is a speciality of Robert Hood.   Never before has there been an illustration of the many values of "grey" within the genre we call Minimal.
While Minimal is now a sound all on its own which varies from region to region, deep concentration takes you through the mind of one of it's pioneers for a close analysis of this particular variation. The Grey Area.

The Grey Area title refers to Rob's vision of Detroit techno and electronic music as the sound that occupied the forgotten zones of Detroit, the areas that became utilised for warehouse parties back in the day, and still humm and whirr with the timeless sound of technology long after the actual heavy indutry has gone. There's a soulfully longing thread tying the tracks together, from the opening anonymous tracks to Maurizio's 'M4.5' and on into previously unobserved depths with a slew of exclsuive and unreleased M-Plant style killers this is eactly the kind of selection that has won Mr. Hood a legion of devoted fans across the world, and has massively influenced the sound of the scene's biggest clubs, with Dettmann and Klock's brand of stripped but powerful techno house owing a massive debt to his sound. We're struggling to name many of the tracks here which is one of the best features of this mix, it's so fresh much of it hasn't even seen the light of day yet but we'd be massively grateful if any of the keener ears out there (or Hood himself) would like to send us a tracklist! Especially track 14, or 17, or 21, what the f**k are they?! If the Fabric mix left you asking for something that little bit deeper and nastier you can't sleep on this righteous mix. Dr. Fresch, aka Tony Fresch, is a DJ/producer/label owner from Los Angeles. His novel take on house music crossed with bassline, Hip Hop, and forward-leaning beats has earned him global recognition in the past year, backed up by his impressive play count in his slew of accessible remixes on Soundcloud. He's also a founding member of Echelon -- the URL sister collective to Hegemon focused on the housier sounds of dance music.

Very few musical acts achieve the levels of unanimous acclaim of Autechre. The English duo of Rob Brown and Sean Booth are not an act you simply like; they are an act you love, fawn over and dream about. They’ve got themselves here over the course of the last 28 years, and have done so by amassing a discography that’s about as perfect, influential and accomplished as could ever be possible. A key Warp label act from day one, they have released tens of albums, well over a ten EPs and have featured on a dizzying amount of essential compilations, mixes and remixes in that time. Without their contribution to the IDM canon, its fair to say the modern musical landscape would look very different. 

Rhythmic but experimental, absorbing yet abstract, cerebral and psychedelic, their ever evolving output is up there with the likes of fellow luminaries Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin as some of the most important in all of electronic music. As well as being fine craftsmen in the studio, Autechre are also revered live performers who really manage to conjure up captivating and otherworldly soundtracks that marry heavy bass with ethereal melody. The pair themselves do not care for genre, but suffice it to say that they have mastered everything from hardcore to ambient to glitch and plenty of indescribables in between. 

When the pair recently laid down an impressive set at Dekmantel Festival, we asked if they might be up for a doing an early inspiration mix, whereby they put together a collection of the sort of electro and hip hop tracks that turned them on as youths. At first they hesitated, pointing out that "we don't do strictly retro stuff, it's too corny.” But alas, a few days later, a huge file landed in our inbox… That file is a 4 hour and 18 minute mix that basically encapsulates not just Autechre’s own influences, but also acts as a fine anthology of the greatest electro sounds of all time. Every sub genre imaginable gets touched upon along the way, with nods to forefathers like Kraftwerk, killer cuts from Man Parrish, classics from Newcleus and retro gold from the likes of The Beat Club. It is a thrilling ride and a truly rare treat that reminds us just why we love Autechre, as well as shining a light on a vast genre that often pays second fiddle to house and techno.

Essential Mix Masters 2015

Hey Leute heute kommt der Sound von Be.the.Flow und Luu aus dem schönen Wien ! In diesem Mix haben sie einige ihrer persönlichen Evergreen Tracks auf ein 2 Stündiges Mixtape verteilt. Diese Musikstücke sind teils aktuell, teils älter aber sie haben eins gemeinsam: Sie übten einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf ihre musikalische Entwicklung aus oder sie sind einfach Tracks, die in fast keinem ihrer Clubsets fehlen dürfen. Zu hören gibt es die beiden unter anderem in der Kantine, im Flex oder in einer der vielen anderen Locations.
In diesem Zusammenspiel aus groovigem, melodischem und treibendem Tech House findet sich auch ein Remake von Be.the.Flow’s Track Hotel Nairobi, der bald erscheinen wird.

Hello!

This is the beginning of our podcast series. 
The podcast will feature artists which have played in our club. With this we want to give you the possibility to recap the greatest parties at our beloved Suicide Circus, to fix highlights for the future or basically to listen to good music.
The first mix comes from PIERRE. Since the mid 90s, Pierre is listed among the most popular techno DJs in Germany. He gained wide spread respect and attention as resident DJ at Aufschwung Ost, the legendary club in Kassel, which was renamed Stammheim later. 

This set was recorded at Suicide Circus 2012-02-19.

Short and to the point
Pierre, 29, often-booked DJ, producer, label owner, legend of “Aufschwung Ost”, “Stammheim” and “Hotel Reiss”, began to organise parties at the tender age of 16, originally in a quiet village. Since he became twenty, he lost interest in public educational institutions and preferred to teach himself. Pierre has founded several companies, plagued his employees, earned and lost money, so he knows all about paying for experience.
Pierre’s perfect party takes place in an atmosphere free of rules yet cultivated, uses a good sound system, a stage set at head height with the crowd, delicious drinks and healthy, unrestrained people in a balanced mix of gender and social standing.
Pierre love(d) Stammheim, the Omen, the FUSE in Brussels, the Alive Festival at St. Vith and . The club culture of straightforward beats would benefit from an overhaul, he said. Asked whether he could imagine still playing in clubs at 40 or 50, he thought it would be “good”, although he refrained to answer. It doesn’t matter. By the way: Even the old pro DJ Pierre sometimes has stage fright, particularly when the gig means a lot to him.

"Some of you may be aware of The Electro Boogie series on !k7. Well to cut a long story short the series was my idea (hence it being named after my X-Mix also on !k7), but for whatever reason I only did two releases (Electro Boogie 2)with Aux 88 and Depth Charge (both artists that I respect heavily)  supplying some mixes.

Next week on 3fm it is 90's request week and I thought as I have just found a "Working" copy* on cd which was recorded in October 1998 that it would be a good idea to in fact  include it almost in it's complete duration. This will be the first time this mix will have ever been heard outside and even though it is a working copy I thought why not? It includes "Apple Mac Victoria" naming the tracks for me to help with reference.

I am still trying to locate the 2nd cd, as I was planning a double release."

*Working copy means a rough mix to give an idea of a finished product. The mix was not perfected and was only a reference. It was recently found alongside a few other "lost" mixes.
Please be aware that this was recorded in the late 90's and the audio quality reflects that.

Pendant la première moitié des années 2000 quelque chose a eu lieu dans le milieu de la musique électronique française. A cette époque les backpackers du rap indé se sont mis à découvrir la musique électronique dansable, puis à accepter le fait que le rap puisse être dansable également. Certains musiciens électroniques de leur côté n'avaient pas envie de choisir leur camp entre l'electroclash et l'IDM intello, deux genres qui prédominaient en France à l'époque. 

Une troisième voie s'est créée sans vraiment que l'on ne s'en rende compte sous l'impulsion de gens comme Feadz et Orgasmic qui mélangeant techno et rap sudiste, moins d'une année avant de découvrir le "Hollertronix" de Diplo & Low Budget qui allait changer le DJing à jamais. Une poignée d'européens gravitant autour de Bpitch Control et d'Institubes se sont mis à inventer un style entre rap d'Atlanta (le crunk à l'époque), techno et booty dopplereffekt-ienne avec une forte influence d'IDM de Prefuse73 à Team Shadetek en passant par Team Doyobi, en ajoutant à cela un attrait coupable pour les samples d'eurodance à la limite du mauvais goût. Le groupe Radioclit décide de réunir tout ce petit monde dans un article de présentation chez leurs amis du magazine anglais Hip Hop Connection. Il faut trouver un nom pour baptiser cette nouvelle scène et à moitié en rigolant, quelqu'un suggère "Eurocrunk". L'article parait et le mot "Eurocrunk" devient instantanément ringard et embarrassant. 

Puis arrive la grosse vague french touch 2.0 et des disques des Daft Punk et de Justice à l'énergie très rock imposent la turbine 4x4 comme seule voie possible pour un musicien électronique français ayant envie d'attirer l'attention et de se faire une carrière internationale. Ce style va tellement séduire que de nombreux musiciens de la scène dite "Eurocrunk" vont complètement abandonner les expérimentations faites dans le sens des hybrides rap/techno pour se mettre à concevoir une musique binaire énervée et distordue, bien plus immédiate et efficace en club. Le genre, mal nommé, étouffé dans l'œuf, tombe aux oubliettes. 
Quelques années après, pendant que les parisiens sortent banger sur banger, des soirées montréalaises prennent le nom de Turbo Crunk (collectif dont sera notamment issu Lunice) et des gens comme Machine Drum, Lazer Sword ou Hudson Mohawke prennent plus ou moins le relais de ce style. En 2013 c'est le Trap électronique qui prédomine, et il est étourdissant de voir à quel point ce style très populaire aujourd'hui à de choses en commun avec ce qu'une poignée de parisiens, d'allemands et de scandinaves produisait vers 2003. Avec ce mix j'ai essayé de faire le mix que nous aurions du faire à l'époque pour officialiser ce style. 

Que sont-ils devenus? 
- Feadz est passé du label berlinois Bpitch Control aux parisiens de chez Ed Banger via l'aventure Uffie ;
- Para One a intégré TTC à l'époque de "Beat Down" (dont les scratches sont signés DJ Orgasmic) puis a eu la carrière qu'on connait avec notamment deux albums solo, l'un chez Institubes et l'autre chez Marble ;
- Tacteel : co-Fondateur d'Institubes, son morceau "Beats Like That" sonne littéralement comme les beats de rap qui sortent aujourd'hui. Après un passage chez TTC il sort plusieurs EPs solo et vient de signer un album de pop française sous son vrai nom Jérôme Echenoz ;
- Modeselektor ont quitté Bpitch pour lancer leurs propres labels Monkeytown et 50 Weapons à la rencontre de la techno berlinoise et de la bass UK ;
- France Copland, pionniers de la booty-tech française, sont aujourd'hui d'un côté Crackboy et de l'autre Benjamin Morando chez Discodeine.
- Ceebrolistics, groupe de rap finlandais, se sont scindés notamment en Teeth (post-dubstep chez 502, Ramp, Sound Pellegrino) et en Michael Black Electro (l'un des pionniers du Skweee chez Harmonia) ;
- Stacs Of Stamina était le groupe de rap suédois de Johan Hugo, devenu entre temps la moitié de Radioclit avec le français DJ Tron, puis la moitié de The Very Best avec Esau Mwamwaya.
