He was an old school friend of mine. I've known Derek since we were 12. We walked to school together and went to folk clubs before he started performing. Although he always performed, in the playground and just anywhere.

I still think of him a lot. I have one of his old guitars which I still play.

He played wonderfully.. such a romantic feel.. Sorry about your loss, Dave! And thank you for sharing your friend's music. Wonderful tribute

I like the initial slow loping cadence to this piece and then how it transitions to sound slightly faster...I get a sense of peaceful determination from this one, lovely :)

The tone and playing of this piece is simply wonderful; an injection of beauty straight into the soul. To leave something like this behind is probably one of the best epitaphs anyone can have - that and the strength of good friends willing to share it with others despite their own sadness.... Magnificent arrangement and performance of this classic. Great legacy of The Amazing Mr Smith.

This is not me playing. This is an old friend of mine called Derek Smith who died a few days ago. He was a wonderful comedian with the stage name "The Amazing Mr Smith" but was also a fine guitarist. His guitar only albums were amongst my most played CDs over the last 10 years. Here is his beautiful arrangement of Peter Maxwell-Davies' "Farewell to Stromness". The mood here completely captures the way many of us feel about his passing. 

(The picture incidentally shows Derek playing his condom harp at one of our charity concerts a few years ago…you get the idea ;) )

I hope you appreciate this piece. I must be honest, Cubase was critical to create this track. I had it for a long time in my head. I tried many times to play it but it was never good. I'm not such a good piano player, so I decided to record two sections: one for the harmony and the other for the melody. I hope you appreciate, however, the composition and the passion with which I played.

Aaron Martin’s album "A Room Now Empty" sees him returning to the memory-based recordings of previous albums such as "Almond", "River Water" and "Chautauqua", where layered meanings in the music and titles don’t allow a single clear-cut reading of the music.

“A Room Now Empty is similar to the concept of Day Has Ended where Christoph Berg and I created music to encompass the passing of a day, but stretched out for the passing of a lifetime or at least a portion of a lifetime,” says Aaron.

Using cello, electric guitar, bass, roll up piano, banjo, concertina, acoustic guitar, voice, ukulele, singing bowls and lap steel, "A Room Now Empty" keeps the same intimacy and directness of Aaron’s previous albums, with a slightly more processed sound creating distance within the music.
