Radio Utopia, News from the world (French Pavilion)
The insect vibrational signals we can hear were recorded in different locations in Slovenia during the summers of 2020-2023 and show a fraction of the rich diversity of substrate-borne vibrations that insects create to communicate in a meadow.

Slovenian vibroscapes (Venice Biennale 2023)

These insect substrate-borne vibrations were recorded with laser doppler vibrometers from local plants in a wet meadow located in Gais, Switzerland. Laser vibrometers are able to detect the vibrational signals emitted by insects that travel through the surface of the plants in the meadow. Only two local insects could be identified by the signals they produced, and those were Aphropora major (a froghopper) and Sorhoanus assimilis (a leafhopper). Over 20 different insect signals were documented during the field study. Although their identity can not be revealed yet, we hypothesise that many of these signals belong to the Auchenorryncha suborder of insects, specialised in vibrational communication. The signals, emanating from the vibrational interactions within the local vibroscape, were extracted from 150 hours of recorded material collected over the course of August 8, 9, and 10, 2023. The research of vibroscapes in nature is rather recent and this was the first time that an alpine meadow was recorded.

liner notes excerpt: "the custom of "chlauseslä" and the activities of the packs called "chlausrotten" in the valley of ägeri (in the canton of zug, central switzerland) can be verifiably traced back to the 16th century, though the roots of it reach back as far as the 4th century.

after dark, the "rotten", packs from different parts of the village, equipped with cowbells ("treicheln", carried on a yoke across the shoulders) and whips move through the village, from house to house. originally this noise tradition was meant to scare away ghosts and keep the house and court clean of evil figures..."

33EMYBW (@wushanmin) is a Shanghai-based musician and a core member of the city’s electronic/experimental scene, known for numerous collaborations and appearances in many local projects. Now affiliated with the @svbkvlt label and appearing as part of their showcase at Unsound, she explores the futuristic sounds of post-club music. This podcast is a live recording of 33EMYBW at ALL, Shanghai, on 7th July 2019. She names this set ‘Trash Set #1’. The whole set is comprised of outtakes, sketches, demos and unused ideas from last years Golem album on SVBKVLT, as well as her upcoming release Anthropods, which will be premiered at Unsound 2019 in Kraków.
