Dusted off the trusty old Volca Drum machine to create the beat for this one. In years past I used it quite a lot, including on many of the early Smoking Trout tracks, but it had been a little while. I'm also continuing to experiment with longer stretches of guitar, and incorporated most of the synth arsenal on this one. This was kind of inspired by reading the news here in the US, a strange mixture of depressing and ridiculous weirdness haha.

Well hello. Here’s some rustic Mountain Blues, played on extremely oxidized guitar strings, with me hollering from the mountain top. Hahahaha. The song hints at a personal authenticity, and the experience of possibly unraveling any prior conditioning (Pavlovian or otherwise) that may constrict our lives in some way. It’s also about the different personas we portray to the outside world. How we may act at work, or on a first date, or with our spouse, or kids, friends, enemies, those who hurt us, even our stage personas comes into play…. So this song is asking a lot of us. In other news, right now in June, the mountains are snow covered and it froze last night. That is late spring, early summer here. Gardenwise, this year, I am planting a lot more Brassicas: Kale, Cabbage and Broccoli, and they are growing well. I am going to try to fence off the carrot/beet beds, as the voles always eat more carrots and beets than I ever do. Onions, leeks and garlic have been growing since March. I transplanted 50 lettuce plants I grew from seed that I saved from last year’s lettuce. The berry bushes and fruit trees have really blossomed this year. There are squash, cukes, tomato and pepper plants inside by the window, to be transplanted outside next week, quite a mess… all of which keeps me busy…. Hahaha. What happens if "Dust In the Wind" meets "Classical Gas"?  I sought to answer that profound question one morning when I was riffing on an A-minor chord and couldn't think of another way to describe this acoustic concoction. I couldn't think of a better name for it either, but seemed to have a "ballad" feel to it, either about a hero or villain, I'll let you decide, and maybe catch a "catnap" thinking about it:)

This song began with Ken's oldest son, Jack, who laid down the basic rhythmic beat. Ken took over after that with the rest of the beats, though. Jack just graduated high school last week, and he's into hip hop and trap music, so he wanted to share some of it with his musician father, who is very proud of him.
  Tez was first up on this one, which surprised me when I went back and checked the workflow. He added the perfectly placed guitar hits throughout. Josh was next up, using his synth to add the falling bass line. Last, but not least, Terry came aboard, adding the moody, melodic, high register synth.
  When it was all finished, we asked out resident pro mixer, Stephen, to mix it for us. 
  This song was in its current form for about the past eight months. It was originally part of a series of vehicles Eclectic Collective composed for The Mysterious Decibel. He got caught up in life, though, and had to abandon the project. So, we sat on it, asking all the rappers we know if they'd be interested in having a go with it, but no one bit. So, with Jack's recent graduation, Ken revived it as a celebratory song for his son. It could still use some vocals, too, so think of this as an open invitation to anyone who want to do the honors. 
  We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it. 
  Oh, and just a side note for all of our friends who follow along with us, we won't be releasing a song this coming Friday, the 4th, but will have  new one for you, the following Friday, the 11th. Thank you for keeping up with us! 


Throwing Rocks - The Eclectic Collective

In 2018, I did a SoundCloud collaboration with @clive-hawkins after one of his tracks inspired me to write lyrics over his haunting instrumental 'After the Bomb'.

Clive had posted the line "let us not forget the consequences............of unleashing weapons of mass destruction!", and that comment, coupled with listening to his moody track, had me writing the complete lyrics inspired by his music in about 1.5 hours.

In 2025, I am currently working with accomplished keyboard player and Prog Rock enthusiast @Dee-Zee (Dave Zeitlin), to create an Ethno-Prog album 'Beyond the Veiled Horizon'.

So when I recently re-heard the old collaboration I wondered if Dave's keyboard wizardry could add a whole new dimension to the lyrics. The message in the lyrics has perhaps has even more urgency in 2025.

Using Clive's harmonic rhythm that inspired the melody, that inspired the lyrics, I basically gave Dave a blank slate to see what he could come up with as parts. As usual he delivered some amazing ideas and playing and this left me re-assembling this Redux version of the collaboration. Once again, I made use of the Alto vocal talents of 'Mrs Bouzouki' in a vocal harmony section and as part of some harmony stacks. Towards the end, the additional female backing lines are from the Soundiron 'Voices of Gaia' collection featuring the vocal talents of Linda Strawberry.

I feel the addition of a church organ really added to the track. As a result I removed a choir part I added in the original collaboration and added some low strings to add some weight to the bottom end in places. Besides piano, Dave also added some synth pads to keep things interesting during what is quite a long track. I hope that people can hear why I enjoy working with Dee Zee. I think he's done a fantastic job with this track.

I decided to keep my original vocal takes from 2018 but I feel the track has benefited from my improved mixing and production techniques. 

I feel that once again this track is a great example of how music can be created using the SoundCloud platform. A collaboration can build on a collaboration to create something bigger than the sum of the parts. Thanks @clive-hawkins for being the catalyst for this and @dee-zee for your compositional skill and playing. 

As a follow-up to this song you can watch this movie on the Internet Archive, produced in 1969 about the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombs of 1945. Some of the imagery is not for the faint-hearted.
