Dear Rain

Another composition recorded before the war. I hope one day I will return to my home studio. Any support from you is much appreciated on these extremely hard times for our country, our family. 
I could have recorded much new music for the last 9 months... unless russians came to our yard to "save" us with their tanks, missiles, bombs and war planes at 4 a.m. on Feb 24th. And yes, they saved us from our house, from our normal life, from our dreams and plans. They saved my elderly parents from their home and peaceful life in retiring, saved my daughter from happy childhood, from school, from her friends and vacation by the sea. We'll never forget and never forgive it! I'm sure that russia will get what it deserves - each rocket they launch on Ukraine will turn to another 10 years of disaster for their cowardly people.

Happy New Year and even more importantly, Happy Martin Luther King weekend.  

We continue to move forward.  The world can be difficult, frustrating, complex and sad. Yet……(queue long pause as we look up at the starry sky together) it can be quite beautiful despite this reality. A reality inside a reality. I catch glimpses of this world in the spaces in-between my chattering, worried, planning, catastrophizing incessant thoughts. It is the feeling that sits behind the other ones. It is the faintest echo of peace and happiness that can't quite be articulated without sounding corny.  Some of you know what I am talking about.  Music can tease this feeling out from hiding too. Life is so short and it seems to speed up with each passing year. A summer in child time can last years. Years in adult time can feel like moments.  We are star dust. We are myth makers. We are ………something that is very good.  You are something very good and my wish is for you to see this my friend for this New Year and the ones to follow. In your darkest corner, may you see a little light; Moonbeam Blue.

This song has a sweet laid-back arpeggiated Hawaiian ambiance counter-balanced by a reversed sampled pad effect that creates a more surreal edgy vibe that hints at the story to follow. This pad was created using recorded samples of reverb tails created from the very instruments playing in the song itself. This sample is then reversed and carved up a bit. This texture adds a strange, yet familiar feel and gluing effect that I liked. 

The percussive sweetener details and the push and pull of room space as the song progresses were strong artistic design focus areas. They help to create and solidify the moonlit beach fire atmosphere. This crucible helped the luminosity of the vocal story-telling to come to life. Later I add a Chinese Yangqin instrumental section just because I could.

Some time ago, I needed to do some thinking about my DTM system and was reviewing my music data.  At that time, I suddenly noticed this song by Mrs Rhymes.  About a year ago, I think.  I had a preliminary recording of my guitar to go along with this wonderful piece.  Remembering that, I played it back and listened.  I didn't like my guitar playing, even though it was just a temporary recording for notes.  I don't think the sounds and phrases I used at that time match the original song.  Compared to that, the original song is still great.  So I grabbed my guitar and started recording.  A few hours later, I was in the process of uploading my freshly finished work here.

The key of this song is C#, and I think that what we should be aware of as a performance style is "B♭m/C# pentatonic".
I do not mix tapping, sweeping, or other fancy playing techniques in my guitar playing with this outstanding piece. I tried to keep the accompaniment very simple. This excellent piece, which I picked up as an example this time, will be finished with two things in mind: "B♭m/C# pentatonic". However, in a blues scale song, one song uses four pentatonic forms. Therefore, first of all, I believe that it is very important to be aware of "two things" on a daily basis and to practice guitar playing repeatedly.

And before we understand it in words, what we value most is the encounter with works and artists that we can continue to enjoy playing along with our favorite music as many times as we want, even ten times if necessary. Right?

DRAWBRIDGE was created at my home studio and referenced a hugely popular pop song called Driver's License by Olivia Rodrigo. The song sounds nothing like Driver's License but drew inspiration from this song's sound textures and arrangement. DRAWBRIDGE was crafted to deliver an emotional tension and buildup in a similar fashion.

Each winter here in the UK, small birds enact one of natures great spectacles. Each evening flocks ranging from a few hundred to over 100,000 individual Starlings form up into a single flowing entity swirling above their communal roosting sites. 
Why they do this is not fully understood, with theories ranging from a strategy to distract predators, to a grand display designed to draw more birds to the flock for the purpose of maximising the body heat being generated by the mass of the flock in the roost. 
Whatever the purpose of this behaviour it creates a unique and magical aerial display of great beauty.

The track began with the repeating mallet sequence, then the strings and lastly the piano. I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to improvising around basic chord progressions at the moment and this is another product of this approach. I'm  resisting the temptation to quantize or mess around with the midi in post, so it's all as played and of the moment.

What's this song about Dave?

NAZCA - Paploviante Open Collaboration Offer

This is a song that Steve of Steve's Planet wrote and for which recorded the vocals and acoustic guitar. He then gave it to Ken (K2 and the Three, K2 and the Four) to play with it. Ken added rocking drums and perfect backing vocals. Ken then sent it to me, and I added the bass, organ, piano, and more, high backing vocals. Then we got Tez (Llanpsych) involved to work his magic and mix the beast, which he did masterfully, as usual. This is our first song with Steve, but it certainly won't be the last. We hope you enjoy it.

May I be able to make a normal song to all tastes? This rock ballad was my best opportunity, though I had to prog it a bit... well, please tell me.
