This part 1 of a a very special two mix set dedicated to classic drum n' bass sounds, reimagining nights at two of the most influential London clubs of all time: Speed and Metalheadz. This mix focuses on imagining a night at Speed at the Mars Bar, Soho ... a night I never went to!

From the blog post:

Taking place on a Thursday as well as being located right in the heart of London instead of a massive warehouse on the outskirts meant that Speed attracted a different, more mature crowd, including curious fans of other styles of electronic music as well as people from the music industry. It’s hard to overstate the importance of this night to the development of the lighter side of drum n’ bass – it was a testing ground for new sounds that could then be taken on the road around the UK (and the world!) on the weekends. It was a place where people from the scene – producers, dj’s, a&r’s, hangers-on – could connect, interact and plan collaborations. It was somewhere that this sound could take root and grow, away from the pressure cooker environment of the big raves, where thousands of teenagers wanted the latest mental sounds. It was also a crucial venue for spreading the sound beyond the existing scene, a place where people who would never dream of going to a One Nation or AWOL or Roast could be turned on to high-speed breakbeats.

I Never Went to Speed ... [Special 90's Atmospheric Drum n' Bass Mix]

Some meandering words...

Whenever Glastonbury rolls around I am reminded of two key things: my Dad, and my old rave tapes. It is possible I have attached a disproportionate significance to the latter, given that attending the festivals in 92/93/94 were all-consuming, life-changing experiences, but the tapes I bought there remain as the only physical artifacts from those halycon days. The first two years I got in free with my Dad's band (K-Passa, if you're interested; they're still going), and so I would often end up wandering the festival alone without a plan, chatting to randoms and just soaking up the atmosphere.  1992 is strongest in my memory - I recall my Dad shoving me into the band's transit van at the start of the journey; this contained both the band and several crates of K cider liberated from a student ball they'd played the night before. Father wisely opted to drive solo in the family car and was probably fairly amused to see his 16-year-old son emerge from the conveyance into the festival around lunchtime, extremely drunk and almost delirious in his need for a piss. And so it began. K-Passa were ejected from the backstage area by teatime in advance of Van Morrison's arrival, at which point I was amused to see a few middle-aged ladies behind a crash barrier waiting for the secret guest, Tom Jones. I don't recall any knickers being thrown at that point. I was lucky enough to see a few big name acts, but oddly, after cross-referencing against the three line-up posters, I can't pin them. Could have sworn I saw 808 State, or some other 'stadium techno' group - The Orb maybe? Inexplicably the only ones I recall for sure were the grunge band L7 (awesome, but shhhh... we don't talk about that), Galliano, and US3 at the jazz stage ... or was it Oui 3 ... fuck's sake. Look, the real holy grail for this rave kiddy was hanging around the various rave stalls throughout the lazy days, and then after the main stage curfews, dancing way into the small hours without the need for pharmaceutical assistance ... ok that came later ... I was just high on the vibe, man.

Why am I talking about all of this? My tastes back then were all over the place - hardcore/jungle obviously, techno, breakbeat, indie, grunge, jazzy hip hop, gangsta rap, ambient, dub ... but the specific Dave Angel tape above has become a central symbol of those glorious raving days of summers gone by. Jazzy, melodic electronica, sunny, positive and uplifting, transitioning into headbanging techno. I already did one tribute to Dave's unique style back in lockdown ... don't mind telling you I've played it countless times since and for me it's hard to top, but I've had a fair crack at it here. Top Buzz Studio Set 1990

Manchester’s techno pioneers, 808 State, were formed in 1988 when Martin Price, owner of the city’s seminal Eastern Bloc underground record store, teamed up with Graham Massey, formerly of Factory Records’ Biting Tongues. Other members included Gerald Simpson(later known as A Guy Called Gerald), Andrew Barker and Darren Partington(DJ Duo The Spinmasters). Numerous collaborations & re-mixes followed as well as some of the finest acid house & techno tunes ever created.
For this mix, i have taken 26 tracks, chronologically, from the bands first 5 albums, and associated singles, between 1988 & 1991.

Bring the beat back (Extended Mix)

Hi, i'm Dave, from Coventry, and i started djing way back in 1990, while still at school, inspired by legends Sasha and Carl Cox after listening to sets, given to me from older friends!

 I spent a lot of my time during the early 90's at the legendary club Eclipse, in Coventry, where i met lots of fantastic people including some of the finest dj's around at the time, doing a couple of sets in Marco Polo, Birmingham. I also ventured across the midlands, clubbing wise, to places including Shelleys, Institute and Coast 2 Coast.

 After 5 years, i fell out of love with the scene, seeing as it was changing and not to my liking, to be honest and in 1995 i gave up raving and djing. Kept my vinyl, though, just in case!!

 Got back into it in 2006 after listening to online radio playing a lot of oldskool, and thought i'd give it another go. Not had the confidence to play out again, since but you never know.....
