During the 35 years of making music, Dave Lee has constantly been searching for new singers and writers to work with. A search that’s ended up with many fantastic collaborations and releases with the likes of Thelma Houston, Taka Boom, Dianne Charlemagne and Seal. More recently this quest led him to Maurissa Rose and the creation of their album ‘London / Detroit’. After hearing Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish record Dave reached out to her and after a few long phone conversations and mp3 swaps, they both agreed a visit to London would be much more fun than trying to work together remotely. Maurissa made the journey from her home in Detroit to write and record an album with Dave at his studio in March 2022 - as they both feel that creating music together in the same room is always better. The fruits of their labour yielded 11 brand new songs (and 1 cover) tapping into their collective love of Soul, Disco and R&B, with a sprinkle of Soulful House. This album is a special one for Dave Lee as it’s the first time in his career he’s recorded an entire album with the same singer on every track.

In the album’s liner notes Dave talks of how Maurissa is a naturally creative person, full of ideas, warm & unpretentious which is reflected in her vocal performances throughout ‘London / Detroit’. Dave’s expertly crafted music is backed up with a deeply passionate yet effortless delivery from the Detroiter, a marker of someone who has honed and perfected their art. When it comes to the music side of this LP, Dave Lee is once again proving he’s still at the top of his game and shows no sign of relenting. Drawing from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Soul/Funk/Disco, we are treated to a range of styles, BPMs and influences from 95bpm street soul to more uptempo disco and boogie flavours. Be it the rippling synth voyage opener of ‘You Decide’, taking the Johnnie Taylor classic ‘What About My Love’ into a modern Boogie realm, upping the tempo on the soulful houser ‘I Feel the Sun” or bringing the tempo back down to the bassy acidic chug of ‘You’re Giving Me Life’. Mr Lee is truly adept at creating a modern disco soul sound without the usage of samples.

London and Detroit might be two very different cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic but this album is proof that creative synergy knows no distance.

Time to take a trip back to the Windy City. A firm favourite song from Dave Lee’s highly acclaimed ‘Metamorphosis’ album under his AC Soul Symphony alias. This time we’ve pulled in some heavyweight remixes to refresh things up.

The main man Dave Lee has flipped it musically, but still with reference and reverence to Chicago with a deep jackin’ Chi-Town Tribute Mix, slapping a thick 303 front and centre. Up next is the Windy City legend himself, Glenn Underground, with his irresistibly cosmic take, drawing on his deep jazz-funk knowledge. Finishing up is a man we all know and love here at ZR, Opolopo, allowing the heart of the original to refract through his plethora of boogie-funk synth work & studio wizardry.

Ralphi Rosario is a pioneer of house music, kicking off an influential DJ career in Chicago when he was still in high school. The remixes and productions that followed have garnered him #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits as well as more than 20 well-respected years spinning records. He’s an artist who represents the ethos of Glitterbox Recordings, with decades of quality house music history woven into every beat. Also in line with the spirit of the label, ‘Wanna Give It Up’ is a classic track given some very tasteful modern updates, from Full Intention, Dr Packer and Jamie 3:26. Full Intention are first, employing their signature grooving bassline for a very bouncy little number. A suitably funked-up version from disco edits maestro Dr Packer is present and correct, alongside a ‘Disco Party Version’ from Chicagoan Jamie 3:26, amping the party up a further notch with some irresistible clinking percussion and a lazy-cool groove. Finally completing the package is the familiar ‘Légo’s Dub’ from the original release.

Ralphi Rosario With Linda Clifford 'Wanna Give It Up' (Dr Packer's Lego's Dub Remix)

Ahead of a full-length album coming on Glitterbox Recordings, the king of disco re-edits Dr Packer presents four of his versions of soulful dancefloor favourites old and new, giving a flavour of what’s to come from the LP. ‘Different Strokes’ kicks off with a re-rub of the MK-produced LaTrece ‘I Want To Thank You’, itself a house cover of Alicia Myer’s soul classic from 1981. Dr Packer pulls back on the tempo, making way for keyboards that echo the vocal melody and enhanced percussion. Next, he remixes ‘Still In Love’ by Shuya Okino, a contemporary nu-disco classic with gorgeous string instrumentation and a tight guitar riff. In true Dr Packer style, his version has plenty of extra funk, fleshing out the bassline to suit a dynamic disco set. A remix of ATFC’s ‘Bad Habit’ is next, again given the effortlessly laidback, groove-laden Dr Packer treatment. Finally it’s Soul Rebel’s ‘I’ll Be Good’, a vocal house classic from the mid-noughties, reinterpreted masterfully for today’s Glitterbox dancefloor.
