On ZR030 we are pleased to present our sophomore record for 2014's revamped launch of ZENBI RECORDINGS - After In My House - a Raging Techno release served up by Colombian producer Juan Ddd - with remixes from Rafa Barrios and Michele Pinna.  

Juan Ddd, born Juan Diego Mendoza Patiño, is coming off of a monster 2013.  With successful releases on Form, Definitive, 1605, and Spinnin Deep - artists like Umek, Sebastian Leger,  Stefano Noferini, Monika Kruse, and Uto Karem are taking notice and giving full support.  Juan Ddd's After In My House package is a nuclear powered techno submarine further armed to the hilt by Rafa Barrios' and Michele Pinna's weapons of dancefloor destruction.  

The Original Mix fires the first shot and craftily basses you into submission, not-so-gently building a steamroller of a groove that's got plenty of power and ample techno punch.  Rising Spanish Techno Star Rafa Barrios continues the barrage of musical assets, rooted by a fierce kick and rolling sub bassline that deftly raises the bar with not one but two massive breakdowns - each followed by a drop of seismic proportions.  Finally, Sardinian Producer Michele Pinna shows up, throws down - and takes the original's parts to another level of power, weight, and gate.  Boom.

A true Yoshitoshi classic released in 1998 that went on to become a global phenomena. Over the course of the past two years, Marc Houle's music has quickly elevated his studio prose into desired analogsoaked treasures of the dancefloor. Developing fans from vinyl to the club, the new double pack outing titled BAY OF FIGS showcases new developments in his already minimal pop genius that have been tested on the road over the past few months. From the manic title track onward his sound continues to develop from a rich bed of electro pop and minimal techno, with gems that stay in the groove or contort themselves by design.

The arctic storm that is "Bay of Figs" sends a simple yet effective message through it's haunting and menacing drone. On the bouncing and loose "Thirds In Trees", Marc drops in live claps and bass guitar in the melodic and hooky mood reminiscent of the Kingsley classic "Popcorn". A clear fan of euro & industrial attitudes from decades past, "Black Jack 13" claps and bends with electro fever, rattling around erratic effects and synth lines all under four minutes time. One of the more intense tracks in Houle's live sets is the square-wave melody of "Edamame". But its "Items and Things" that highlights Houle's musicianship for synth pop while also revealing his obvious contribution another side project, Run Stop Restore (the trio with Magda and Troy Pierce). Houle's arrangements, melodies and choice effects create easy instrumentals that hold their own beauty without vocal attachments.

In the past year he has remixed Slam's "Kill The Pain" single (featuring Dot Allison) and "Turbo Dreams" by Ellen Allien & Apparat. Between DJs championing his work in clubs and after-parties or making it an essential addition on mix albums from producers like Slam or Loco Dice, Houle is working his way to the top. His live performances from Europe to the US have doubled the impact, on tour in the US during May for the min2MAX bus tour.

Why are the vocals turned down so low? This is the way we make Techno!

To mark the label’s 50th release Marc Houle gets right back to basics with two raw, stripped down future classics. What’s more both vinyl cuts, “Techno Vocals” and “On It” clock in at under six minutes meaning that this compact 12inch’s sound and message is going to be coming through extra loud and clear.

On “Techno Vocals” (as with all Houle productions) each sound is perfectly realised, commanding its own space with metronomic discipline. The rigid drum patterns, analogue explosions, regimented snare rolls, laser guided effects and delayed bleeps interact with supreme efficiency, while the arrangement is mapped out with cool, calculated intent. The result is a totally robust example of A-grade techno that’s really brought to life by the self-referential, pitched down vocal hook!

It’s well documented that Marc has more than a passing interest in 80’s electro, New Wave and retro computer games and these influences are somehow more apparent on Minus 50 than on his earlier solo releases or as part of Run, Stop, Restore. “On It” in particular will turn a few heads, making, as it does, a detour into previously unexplored territory. Revolving around a heavily filtered melodic bass riff, Houle punctuates the dry, upfront groove with a choice selection of rough, old school samples before dropping into a series of moody bass variations that give the track its distinctive flavour.

To complete the release, dub and accapella versions of “Techno Vocals” are also available as digital downloads offering amongst other things the chance to reformat the vocals over the original beats.
