A quarter past 10, I’ve been working four hours,
Time to refresh my brain.
A hundred metres to my favourite café.
I’ll go to Earth again.

Into the welcoming calm,
They’re there, waving “Hello”
Their perfect faces, well-practised care:

Mid-morning bustle in Earthy Café,
Writers at their tables: children at play.
Every table buzzing with chatter and laughter.
They move through this chaos, no hint of disaster.

Gliding through the tables, with trays in hand
Are Jess, and Christie, and Evey.
They smile as they move with professional care:

Back at the steam face, lunchtime rush.
All tables busy, pressure is on.
Order, process, service, pay, clean, carry on.

Arabica, decaff, Lapsang and chai.
Soup, sandwich, salad, cake, and pie
Lever, grind, press, wait

The sheen on their face shows their state. But …
