Elderbrook x Andhim - How Many Times

Hailed as “LA's best kept secret”, David “DAVI” Khanjian internationally acclaimed DJ, producer, radio host, and label owner grew up surrounded by the sounds of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Deeply passionate about music since childhood, it didn't take long before he was admitted to the prestigious Komitas State Conservatory's music department in Yerevan, Armenia. But it wasn't until his move to Los Angeles that the magic truly began to unfold.

At the young age of 17, Davi began producing electronic dance music inspired by many world-class producers and DJjs like Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Danny Howells and 16 Bit Lolitas. Shortly thereafter he was the resident at the top electronic dance club in Armenia where his career began to unfold. 

With his move to Los Angeles in 2006, Davi dove right into the underground scene and locked himself in the studio for years to follow while playing at local Los Angeles clubs nights like Monday Night Social at Playhouse, Avalon, and Vanguard.

Davi’s countless hours in the studio opened many doors for him, first of which was remixing Robert Babiczs’ “Zero” anthem which was released on the new Treibstoff label at the time. Earning recognition from top DJs in the scene like John Digweed, Guy J, Nick Warren, and 16 Bit Lolitas; Davi began establishing a name for himself in the Los Angeles underground scene. 

Shortly thereafter in 2010 Davi became a resident DJ for Insomniac Events in Los Angeles, where he established his residency at Exchange LA and began playing Insomniac Festivals including twice at Escape from Wonderland opening for Richie Hawtin’s Enter stage. Since Davi’s connection with Insomniac, he has been sharing the decks with some of the top producers and DJ’s of our time including John Digweed, Sasha, Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Green Velvet, Art Department, James Zabiela and Hernan Cattaneo to name a few. 

Davi’s name can be found on multiple labels today including Rebellion, Anjunadeep, Treibstoff, Hope Recordings, and Baroque. After having attended Burning Man for over six years, Davi collectively put all his Rebel heart inspiration in the studio to create his first Crosstown Rebels EP in 2013 called “Two Suns in the Sky.” This was a tremendous boost to Davi’s career, which led him to begin touring worldwide in 2014 having visited London, Amsterdam, Israel, New Caledonia, Canada and all over the United States Miami, New York, Boston, and Las Vegas among others.  After Two Suns In the Sky, I wanted to release another similar EP with the same mystic vibe and harmonies, but I wanted the EP to be about something else,” DAVI explains. “As I might take a little  break from making Middle Eastern sounds, I wanted this one to be as special. The word ‘Babylon’ is used in a larger sense to describe the modern world, and the importance it places on wealth and power.”

Back on board Crosstown Rebel off­shoot Rebellion since his massive ‘Two Days In The Sky EP’ was released on the label late last year, LA based producer DAVI returns to deliver ‘The Gates of Babylon’. Never restricted by the boundaries of genre, the title track is highly mystifying as it resonates a distinct middle eastern tone through the infectious melody and layered atmosphere. The release also features the stunning ‘Eclipse’ which follows suit taking you on a deep melodic journey, filled with warm tones, vibrant strings and a solid bassline.

As the page turns to the thirteenth chapter, the Book of Changes speaks of sorcery and secret knowledge.

Häxeri, meaning witchcraft in Swedish, is the alias of 27 year old producer Max Mansson. Although born in Stockholm, he has called London home from an early age. Debut single 'Heavy Dreams' saw widespread success, receiving airplay on BBC Radio, featuring on The Magician’s 'Magic Tape' mix series and reaching nearly 400,000 plays on Soundcloud to date.

Since this first release, Max has been steadily honing his production skills and building his studio, with the overriding aim of cutting back the computer's role in the creative process and leaving maximum room for musicality. 

He returns with the North Sea EP, delivering an outstanding collection of songs that blend live takes of hardware synths and drum machines with with his own recorded instrumentation across bass, guitar, drums, and vocals.

On the second track, Love Is All You Get, warm, captivating ambiences and textures are the order of the day, creating a sonic landscape for the listener to get lost in, building to a vocal refrain worthy of Caribou.

Named for the body of water that separates his native land from his new home, Häxeri's North Sea EP makes for a spellbinding thirteenth tale on Chapter 24.

With Barnt and Axel Boman, two well-known names open the round of remixes for Von Spar's latest album "Streetlife". Both artists had a free choice of songs on which to place their unmistakable stamp. Barnt – long a companion and close friend of the band – uncovers epic dimensions on "Duvet Days" and expands the song to almost ten minutes. Here the celebrated Cologne producer, DJ and co-owner of the Magazine label develops a hypnotic maelstrom, interweaving his typically uncompromising rhythm arrangement of metallic hi-hats and reverberant claps artfully with the New Age Kraut melodics of the original song.

Axel Boman (Studio Barnhus / Pampa) has transformed Von Spar's song "Breaking Formation" into a Balearic Soft Acid ballad. Even if it’s just the second time, it feels like a tradition of ours to release a remix collection of our „Lost“ compilation. Last year in October we had our 6 year club anniversary and for this reason our residents and label artists DJ Aroma, Iorie, Kuriose Naturale, Madmotormiquel, Mario Aureo & Manuel Moreno and Patryk Molinari delivered six outstanding original tracks. Now, half a year later, it’s time for some fresh interpretations. We’ve asked our friends Soukie & Windish, Sebo, Gunjah & Niconé, Spieltape and Tim Engelhardt for this task and even our label head Mario Aureo couldn’t resist the chance to put his hands on a track. We think that all these names already speak for themselves so now it’s your turn to give these amazing works a listen. The EP "Trapped in Time", released by the Berlin label WHATIPLAY is the first result of a cooperation between Marian Herzog and Modshape. Berlin-based like Marian Herzog, the DJ duo produces deep techno. The collaboration however, is a mix of powerful technobeats and playful melodies. The orginals "Trapped in Time" and "Keepsake" are already enticing musical works, while the "Trapped in Time" remix from label boss Sascha Braemer unites them into a wonderful release.

Munich based producers Julian Wassermann & Oliver Deuerling stick to their roots on their “Monopterus” EP. A sonic incursion into the deep ends of house and tech, the duo pay homage to their hometown, as each title track points us in the direction of a well known city landmark.

Much like the monument with the same name, “Monopterus” is a solid construction starting off with an exposed kick that’s soon suspended by intricate melody parts, spare percussion and ethereal synths. Björn Störig tones down the drama on the remix. By focusing on the percussive line, Störig reshapes the melody, giving the track a relentless groove with major peak-time appeal.

“Muechner Freiheit” surprises with its minimalist ambiental approach, as looped piano chords create a sense of celestial atmosphere. The track is stripped back and hypnotic, adding to its sense of airiness. “Schwabing” combines the complementary essences of the past two original tracks, fusing an atmospheric ambiance with a steady, energetic percussion. Hazy vocals increase the oneiric sensation, anticipating the uplifting and elating breakdown. The final track is a robust cut that's full of tension and brooding darkness. Whirring synths and electronic squelches intertwine with ghastly vocals, amping up the murky factor.“Omen” showcases an elegant exercise in layering unusual textures, and the perfect track to finish off the release.
