Starting 2018 with a customary bang and some supremely impressive new music, Desaturate returns to Proton Music with a debut original EP of the highest quality. Bringing “Wanderer” to the label, a three-track offering showcases his unique sound.

Well-travelled across Europe and Australia, Janko Dragovic has had a rich and varied involvement in the underground dance industry, now firmly represented under his Desaturate production soubriquet. As part of the award-winning Progress Inn duo with Igor Kadic, Dragovic has had much success with his compelling blend of progressive, house and techno and a host of production credits to his name. Under his solo guise, he has been no less successful as a century of production credits sits proudly next to the Desaturate name. Thus, Balkan Connection, One Of A Kind and Replug have played host to remix and original work, often in conjunction with a variety of high-profile collaborators. No better illustrated than in work with French icon Rick Pier O’Neil, the duo have continually found success with their unique brand of progressive house fused with techno. Finding a home on Particles, a score of credits has seen a pair of original EPs in the shape of the “Spirals” and “Crouch/Cursed” offerings, while work with Forniva saw the “Unite Divide” EP realised in mid-2017. Solo work finds its epicentre with May 2016’s “The Unholy Mountain” as the three-track EP showcased the strength and diversity of the Desaturate sound while a trio of remixes extended the EP further.

Now returning to Proton Music after a pair of remixes of Nocturna and Pete K in spring 2017, Desaturate’s three-track “Wanderer” EP is a joy to behold. Opener, “Stranded” revels in a free-flowing shimmering lead that evolves elegantly with its filtered and gated effects creating a swathe of patterns. A crisp, hypnotic shell provides rhythmic urgency as a strong beat and running bass line add to the dynamism.

The title track continues the rhythmic themes of its predecessor as a filtered running bass pattern and ticking percussive hi-hats, creates a locked-tight backdrop for a subtle arpeggio sequence to emerge from the lower frequencies, making its presence felt in a gated, swirling breakdown. Building further in the third movement, a pulsating pad adds further depth and texture in a work that creates quite a voyage through its sonic architecture.

Final track, “Unto Each Other” revels in a huge and cavernous bass line that underlies a shuffling hi-hat triplet rhythm. Building in intensity and melodic form as it develops, a rippling, sparkling breakdown showcases the Desaturate skill-set as a female vocal cut adds further balance. Creating a wonderful musical collage in the third movement, Desaturate has created a work of talent and innovation.

A musical triptych sees the “Wanderer” return as Proton Music welcomes Desaturate back into the fold.

The favela glistens with sound, summoned by the collective energy of people chasing pleasure in all ways they can. Up narrow streets coated in patches of flickering light and smells of papaya and hot coals, he walks towards the top of the hill in pursuit of a party, mentioned by whispers in the city below. Stray dogs linger around the huddled groups of children that surround Escher-esque stairways coated in exploding colours, whipping and winding without consideration for uniformity. As he nears the summit, the rumble of tribal rhythms call him forward. Vá com Deus. 

Parisian label Lumière Noire gifts us with their latest release, a remix EP of Iñigo Vontier’s 2019 album ‘El Hijo del Maiz'. The EP features 4 mind-melting tracks, with each DJ expanding upon the electronica-influences of the original by adding heaps of their own flavour. Nicola Cruz’s remix of ‘Bo Ni Ke’ adds a Latin twist along with some Middle-Eastern elements, rolling South American percussion and squelchy synths that create a track that is hypnotic and otherworldly.

Anturage and Amnesia Haze’s alias, Fake Mood, ranges from "charming electronica to more dancefloor-oriented grooves.” As a means to push this sound, the Russian duo launched Parallel Lives in 2019. The label follows a December premiere by welcoming another pair of artists. Juan recently launched a new project to express his current state of mind. As Roze (FR), the Frenchman now presents “Borokhe.” Remixing its B-side, Zakir also makes a remarkable debut. His interpretation of “Eisor” seamlessly blends rich beats, acidic arps and dusty flutes.
