Gary sang when he was about 4 years old. He began to strum a guitar at age 8, composed a song at age 9, learned to play electric-lead-guitar at age 10, and began to study classical guitar playing and music composition at age 16.

He earned his music performance degree (B.F.A.) from the string faculty at the School of Music at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during 1980.

He taught lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music between 1984 and 2005.

He plays often around the suburbs near Wilmette, IL. He is available for solos and bands. He joins jams weekly at Teddy O'Brien's bar and the Wooden Nickel bar, both in Highwood, IL
