I wrote this song on a snowy February night in 2022.  
Tonight, I write these words as the incessant wind kicks up drifts and chills the skin to -40°.  Its the darkest day of the year - the longest night - the solstice.  The Earth has been thrown off-kilter and this hemisphere hunkers down for a deep chill.  Its the time of snowdrifts, auroras, and frozen extremities.  In this weather, there is calm that comes with an awe-inspiring threat:  Mother Nature’s cold indifference.  She blankets the world in a crystalline quilt upon the dead husk of summer and lights up the sky in a brilliant display.  In this freeze arises a primal fear for survival, an existential awe, and the longing for warmth - warmth that can only be found in the company of loved ones, walled off in solitude from the frozen desolation.  Moments before returning to the warmth, I walked alone, shivering, beneath the bejeweled abyss, thinking, “Wow…
its f***ing cold.”

Shaken Up

Not sure why I sat on this one for so long… Its not doing any good sitting in digital limbo, so here you go!  I wrote and recorded this one while living in Denver back in 2021.  Big thanks to my friend Matt Ruder for letting me watch over his wonderful apartment while he was on tour. Check out his latest project, Jasper Ellis, he just dropped a song called “Creature!”  I also want to thank my friends, family, listeners, and all the lovely people of Denver.  If you’re reading this, I just want to say I really appreciate you and am incredibly thankful for the positive impact you’ve had on this young man’s life. Gone away with yesterday (Dedromantic)

One of Phil's great songs from his 1966  _In Concert_ album. The title is variously recorded as "Santo Domingo" and "The Marines Have Landed on the Shores of Santo Domingo." I've been singing this at open stages, recently, and may sing it at our upcoming Phil Ochs tribute concert. I love the way that the song mostly refrains from obvious judgements, just kind of reporting, more or less impartially, though I suppose there's some implicit comment. I also love the tension of the timing and the poetic descriptions, each verse bookended with the refrain.
