Riva Starr - Raw Edits EP Vol 2

The always unpredictable and wildly creative Riva Starr returns to Saved Records for the second installment of his Raw Edits EP. Once again delving into an eclectic soundscape that references a plethora of genres, styles and tempos, Riva highlights why is the master of the edit yet again.

First up, Riva settles into addictive dubby atmospheres whilst splicing together the gospel vocals of Roland Clark’s ‘President House’ with the energetic groove of Sante Sansone’s ‘Groove Vibration.’ Thick swabs of bass pulsate between jackin’ beats which build and build throughout the track, mirroring the escalation of the impassioned vocals that bellow out over the top.

Setting off to work on Alex Under’s ‘Hacer La Compra’ Riva gives a demonstration on the workings of nailing a subtle edit.  Staying true to the original, he keeps things relatively stripped back to begin with, allowing jangling synths to flutter over fluid bass and quick percussion. That sense of swinging funk is then opened up by brilliant use of distorted FX, woozing keys and syncopating electronics.

With his edit of Gene Farris’ ‘Welcome To Chicago’ and Ron Costa’s remix of Miguel Bastida’s ‘Ketanima’ Rivaa digs into deep, dubby textures reminiscent of the heyday of Chicago house. Built around warm pads, melodic synths and surges of deep bass, the track has a laidback vibe but powered by a distinctly underground momentum.

The excellent Spanish based label @DustREC are an offshoot of Getting Projects booking agency, which helps support artists on their roster. Looking at their 8th release due soon they have featured artists like Kwartz, Hector Oaks and H. Paul for example.

Friend of DT, South Korean @Soolee makes his debut with his EP titled Cinder. Contributions also arrive from one to watch @JosePouj and the very interesting duo called @Agnosiamusic.

“Surge” is an atmospheric breather, that swirls from the bottom up. Beginning like a dormant tornado getting ready to spin again, the tension slowly rises by way of some screeching chords and pinging bells all the while the beat remains punchy, deep and exciting as it progresses. Breaking out into more melody parts this is a perfect storm that can be used as a secret weapon for various points of a set.

We hate to say we told you so but... we told you so. It's been a number of years since we first tipped Vienna based Brazilian Joyce Muniz for the big time and having enjoyed watching her meteoric rise through the scene, we're now delighted to welcome her back to Data Transmission for the second time this year.

The arrival of her 'Tilt Forward' EP marks the end of a stellar year for Joyce and having already dominated dance floors the world over with top drawer outings for Exploited and 20/20 Vision, she's arguably saved her strongest release for last. Aimed squarely at the small hours,  Tilt Forward combines a crisp vocal hook with warm chords and distorted soundscapes for a track deep enough to satisfy even the most discerning of deep house connoisseurs.

Steve Rachmad is welcomed to the vinyl-only offshoot Drumcode Limited. ‘Disturbance’ is a punchy little number that has a stuttering synth that rises over the top of the pounding kick drum. ‘Steps’ takes it up a notch with a simplistic bleep pattern that modulates throughout that is awash with a throbbing undercurrent.

Making his debut with three stunning tracks is Berliner Caremajor. On the rise, he has releases on Ricardo Garduno’s Illegal Alien, Abstract Mechanisms and new material recently signed to Emmanuel’s ARTS label, he will be one to most definitely look out for.

“Concinnity” is at its heart a nice slice of melodic Techno, that does mislead with a haunting intro from some gothic sounding chords before the crunchy kick gets into full swing and the power is felt. Some nice cuts and breaks pave the way for some additional high notes as this excellently worked track will create an epic atmosphere for any DJ.

Primitive World is an interesting character. His music has featured on the likes of Black Acre, Ecstatic Sound and Obsession Recordings. However this past week has seen him take the next step along his musical career with the release of a new record for R&S Records.  It's a very club orientated record: with off centre drums and percussion leading the way he has crafted four energetic techno tracks which will be hot property in dance clubs up and down the country in no time at all. This release sees R&S take a step back from some of the slightly more obscure and brings a sense of focus back to the dancefloor. After a one and a half year hiatus from the label, Rhombus (@rhombuslabel) co-owner Stefan Z (stefanzaudio) returns with a diverse four track EP of original works. Crafted in three different countries but ultimately engineered and finalized in Berlin, this EP is a concrete example of Stefan's sound and current taste in club music. From the minimal melodies of "Call it Anything" to the relentless grooves of "Let it Go", this EP showcases the gritty moods of house and techno Stefan is known for.
