The “Charlie on the MTA” folk song tells the sad story of a man forced to stay in a Boston Metropolitan Transit Authority train because he couldn’t pay a fare increase. Local folk musicians wrote the tune as a 1948 campaign song for Progressive Party presidential candidate. 
The Kingston Trio popularized the song in 1959. They performed it in 2004 when the MBTA (successor to the MTA) launched a new entrance device called the Charlie Card.
