Gaiser and Matador - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix - 2014-07-05

DJ/Producer Praveen Achary has developed into one of India's most recognizable electronic music figures. His list of achievements is quite staggering; from regular DJ gigs, organizing Juicebox Underground events, running his Juicebox Music imprint to hosting one of friskyRadio's most loved shows and an ever growing discography Praveen has made a huge impact on electronic music not only in India but worldwide. The 17th release on Nikko.Z's Dopamine Music imprint sees Praveen making his debut on the label with a new single entitled 'Suspended Animation' which includes remixes from: Luis Bondio and Taisuke Chiba.
The 'Suspended Animation' original gets underway with some tasteful beats and delicate electronics. Hazy bell-like accents, swirling synths and washed out vocal stabs work in combination for a fresh sounding harmonic theme which builds nicely towards the main break. The well crafted interlude creates some lovely tension. A foundation of pulsating hypnotic waves sets the stage as the break begins to take shape. As the atmosphere slowly builds alien-like electronics and glacial sounding swells provide the necessary dramatic resonance for a gorgeous conclusion that goes down as Praveen's best musical production to date. 
The first remix is supplied by one of electronic music's brightest and fastest rising stars. Luis Bondio has grown into one of Argentina's most recognizable progressive house producers. With appearances on Renaissance, Hope, DAR and Mesmeric combined with the continued support from international DJs like Nick Warren and Hernan Cattaneo Luis has become one of the genre's most loved artists. For his 'Suspended Animation' interpretation Luis has provided a superb complement to the original. Distinctive beats, grainy electronics and a much spacier atmospheric component all combine for what would have to be Luis' freshest and most unique sounding production to date. 
The second and final remix is provided by Taisuke Chiba who is making is first appearance on Dopamine. The Japanese producer has been a fixture of the DJ circuit in his home country since the mid nineties and he also runs the Laif Art Music imprint. A single on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music in 2012 put Taisuke's name on the global scene and here he's delivered a superb rework of 'Suspended Animation' to close the release out. A much more tech house inspired framework has put an entirely new spin on Praveen's original. The deliberate groove and offset piano stabs and unique, powerful and create a dynamic presence throughout. Simple but incredibly effective rhythms get introduced during the main drop and once the piano hits come back in it proves to be the perfect prelude to a musically satisfying finish.

Praveen Achary - Suspended Animation (Original Mix)

The 19th release on Nikko.Z's Dopamine Music sees Dale Middleton returning to the label for his third appearance. The UK producer helped launch Dopamine with a remix of the labels first release from Nikko Z in late 2012. Dale followed that up with an incredibly prolific 2013. As the year is drawing to a close Dale's discography now includes appearances on Sound Avenue, Perspectives, DAR and Afterglow. Dale's first single for Dopamine is entitled 'Daylight Darkness' and it comes with remixes form Progress Inn and Daneel.
Dale's UK house sound has become more and more refined this year and 'Daylight Darkness' might be the ultimate musical culmination of that. The UK producers pristinely polished beats seem to have an extra bounce here and the warm walls of sub bass create a wonderful harmonic underbelly. Angelic vocal pads and gleaming electronics accent the energetic groove as a larger atmospheric presence begins to enter the composition. These melodious synths cast a wonderful harmonic sheen which sees the piece reach a dynamic conclusion that goes down as one of Dale's best musical productions of the year. 
The first remix on the release is from the hugely up and coming Progress Inn. The Australia based duo have quite a unique thing going at the moment. Their 'Currents' EP (on 3rd Avenue) was one of the freshest sounding releases of the summer season and they continue to knock out impressive remix projects as 2013 comes to a close. For their 'Daylight Darkness' interpretation Progress Inn have provided a deep, dubby rework that complements the original perfectly. Delicate hypnotic themes and a warm funkiness combined with an effortless flow make this an ideal warm-up or back room tune.
The final remix on the release is provided by Daneel who is making his first appearance on Dopamine. The Argentinean producer has been a long time favourite of Hernan Cattaneo who has supported a long line of Daneel's bootleg productions in his live sets, radio shows and charts. For his 'Daylight Darkness' remix Daneel has crafted a spacey progressive interpretation. Trippy electronics and a deeply rooted funkiness combine with the understated themes from the original and carry the track to the main break. The drop showcases some subtle musicality which adds a marvellous touch of class. The bubbly bass textures, celestial vocal pads and panning effects are an absolute delight here and set up a strong melodic conclusion for the tracks second act.

On the heels of their remix for Australia's Sneaky Sound System which has charged up the Beatport charts in the last 2 weeks, tech house act Pleasurekraft are back with a new original, this time for Techno kingpin Umek, on his 1605 Music Therapy label.  The track - aptly named "Satyr Song" was originally conceived this past Spring in Miami - the same time the duo took home the Beatport "Top Track of the Year" award.  After the award announcement was made, Pleasurekraft along with a few close friends decided to celebrate with some drinks on Miami's beaches.  After stocking up on alcohol and packing coolers with ice the group set out for the white sands and sunshine.  On their way, a local homeless man who saw the entourage and coolers overflowing with various alcoholic beverages yelled over at the boys: "You got any Rosé in there?" The boys taken aback by the request shook their heads, upon which point the man announced simply, "Rosé on my brain, Cocaine in my dick vein." Immediately Kaveh looked at Kalle and the two knew that somehow, some way, they HAD to incorporate such a line of sheer hedonistic genius into a future track.  

Fast forward several months and you have "Satyr Song". As Kaveh put it, "Named after the half-man half-goat beasts of Greek Mythology, who were famous for their hedonistic dispositions, immersing themselves and the people around them in drinking and giving in to all their carnal desires, the title of the track just seemed to fit with exactly what the main chant of the song exemplifies: excess" 

Sonically the track is a slight departure from their deeper and circus-like tech house tracks, instead with a shot of adrenaline and housier vibe to boost the dancefloor appeal. Umek immediately signed the track and agreed to do a remix with his signature driving techno sound which takes the track's mantra to the next level.

Bjarki is from Iceland. Born and raised. Despite the fact that Bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dancefloor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. Something this triptych of LPs demonstrate very well. His music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. Bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. Either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

Б | Lefhanded Fuqs | Æ will be released over the coming months and represent a snapshot of his archive, selected by Nina Kraviz for Trip. The tracks were produced months ago, years ago, or in the case of the last track just a couple of weeks ago. What began with 30 tracks is now 41. The three LPs aren’t albums in the traditional sense - the concept being to release the contents of his burgeoning hard drives. The music might together like an album, but Bjarki doesn’t see it that way. It’s essentially an archive that sounds like an album but none of the music was made with this in mind.

“Б ” [TRP007 |17th June] - consisting of more ravey, sample-based music, mostly tracks that Bjarki never had any intention of releasing. But since Nina has been playing many of them in her sets, releasing them has been given new meaning. In the rave culture of the 90s, that’s proved a strong influence on many of these tracks, what matters was actually “being there”. There was no immediate or alternate technological way to experience it otherwise. "Б" из “B” letter in cyrillic. It’s a word play. A missive for “being" in the moment, being present, being aware… B is for Bjarki.
