That's what was written on the signs of five Russian children protesting the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as they went to lay down flowers at the Ukrainian embassy in Russia — and immediately were arrested by the Russian police. What's unthinkable in my hometown Berlin, is just plain normal in Putin's Russian dictatorship.

Like so many people around the world, I was in shock when I heard about the war in Ukraine. So much love and so much good has already been erased from this earth. So many Russian lies and propaganda. So many children, men, and women dying. For what? The greed and ego of this little f****** Putin dickhead and his cronies? I'm afraid so. — I really was (and still am) in shock. I couldn't do anything but watch the news, watch Twitter, Reddit, YouTube from afar — for days. The sadness of all of this. All of this. It's just. I was in tears writing this. 

Creating this piece was what snapped me out of it. At least a bit. And against all the marketing strategy guides I read, I just need to release this now. To get it off my chest. I mean, let's be real, I can't do much. I can donate money. (I don't really have any...) But I can make music. And that's what I did to cope with this.

Maybe there are others out there who feel the same way and whom this might help. In one way or another.

Can You See was originally started in 2020, but it wasn't until 2021 that I found the impetus to really dig into it properly. It was originally started as a bit of a change of direction from most of the more electronic/synth-oriented tracks I was writing at the time, though there's certainly plenty of that in there as well.

The original message behind the song was the idea of wanting desperately to be reunited with someone you know you're never going to see again - whether literally or more in terms of who a person used to be. I hit a total stumbling block after writing about 80% of the track in 2020, and it was only after experiencing a loss of my own in 2021 that I found the necessary drive to finish it properly and give it the ending it deserved. To be honest, it was a hard process and I was feeling particularly raw at the time, but in a weird sort of way it gave me a real sense of closure in letting go & saying goodbye to a friend who I still miss dearly to this day. I still ended up re-visiting the track again in 2022 to flesh out the end of the track and to give it a little extra punch.

This is a bit of a mixture of my more poppy/rocky sensibilities that I'd been exploring with my past couple of singles combined with some of my more usual production sensibilities - so it's a nice mixture of live instrumentation, strings, acoustic drums, and deep synths/pads. I guess you could say there's an element of nu-prog (I still kind of hate that term but I guess it applies) in there as well, and although I wouldn't describe it as a heavy track tonally it deals with some pretty heavy subject matter and I thought it was nice to get some heavier instrumentation in there towards the tail end of the track.

Can You See was a real journey in terms of how it all came together in stages over an extended period of time. In the past, that sort of approach has often killed my enthusiasm for music that's either been "overcooked" or dragged out, but Can You See serves as an exception to that - to me it stands as one of my personal favourite solo tracks that I've worked on in a long time.

"Memory and Matter comprises selected remixes and rarities from the past seven years, nine of them previously unreleased and many of them only issued only on hard to find EPs or as Japanese release bonus tracks. Far from being merely a collection of every single oddity, these tracks were carefully selected into a consistent whole that maintains the same high standard of proper Manual albums. This two-disc compilation is also a labor of love.

Like it's predecessor, Lost Days, Open Skies and Streaming Tides, released in 2007, disc one demonstrates Jonas Munk aka Manual's expertise in creating elegantly layered, shoegazey pop, while disc two focuses on minimalist, slow-moving pieces created mostly from processed guitars. The latter adds an excellent postscript to Confluence - an album that has gained near-classic status in ambient/drone circles since it's release in 2008.

Munk's way of remixing other artists usually involves a complete reconstruction of the original piece, rearranging heavily and adding loads of fresh layers of sound to it, which is obvious when listening to his haunting and atmospheric reworkings of Blue Foundation's ballad ”Dressed in Black” or Mice Parade singer Caroline's ”Sleep”, or the Robin Guthrie produced Annie Barker track ”Cruel”. For Manual fans it's a treat to hear Munk's lush signature sound paired up with (often female) vocals. Disc 1 closes with the 17 minute Manual original ”Camellia”, the most new age-indebted piece in the Manual oeuvre, originally created for a digital-only compilation on Attack9. The track's placid sense of drift and delicately weaved harmonies makes it a standout in Munk's entire body of work.

 Disc 2 is darker, more ambiguous in tone, with ”Three Parts” as the center piece – an enigmatic composition originally created for Ghostly International's ambient/drone compilation SMM: Context in 2011. Other notable selections includes  ”Fields”, a meditative collaboration with Jason Kolb from Auburn Lull, and ”Memento”, a somber piece that exhibits Munk's flair for intensive guitar manipulation."

”Outer Soundscapes” is consisted of 5 songs full of high range ambiences and drones,which will remind you of some kind of trip through the unknown galaxies, far away from the earth. I really like the basic idea behind this project, cuz you can play these tracks to the hardline fans of noise or,on the other hand, you can still impress all the folks who are into ambient and drone music. Even the rookies who are simply out of this kind of experimentation will enjoy in the tracks such as: ”Secrets Of Zaibatsu Technology”, ”Cosmic”, ”Lost In Endless Space”, ”Fading Through Supernova” & ”Outer Voices”. You can even feel the darkness, emptiness and constant feeling of the unknown while listening to this material.
