Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg come together to create a new track after the success of the highly acclaimed 'Lovecraft'. 'Unanswered Question' uses a weighty kick drum and a sensuous vocal before the track breaks into some groovy synth stabs. Julian Jeweil's remix of 'Unanswered Question' is a late night dubbed out version that compromises of a groove that pulsates throughout and falls into the original synth stabs before rising back into the funky, dubbed out groove. The Dense & Pika remix uses unusual percussion to produce a chunky groovy rhythm. When the track breaks it takes the listener on an eerie journey before it kicks back in to the chunky drum beat. The final track 'Virga' is a more melodic techno offering that finishes the single off with a classy finish.

“Silky” is the second single to be taken from this summer’s critically acclaimed Electric Rescue album - “Sonic Architecture” (BEDER01CD). As one of the album’s superb highlight tracks, “Silky” is a perfect example of how Electric Rescue embodies French electronic music’s avant-garde sensibility, combining it with a melodic techno worldview that crosses all borders. Electric Rescue (aka Antoine Husson) is one France’s leading electronic music producer/DJ talents. His Bedrock album - “Sonic Architecture” - is a 12 track collection that showcases his ability moving deftly between the kind of taut, melodic techno; heads-down, harder-edged dancefloor rhythms; and experimental electronica he’s brought to prominence on Gallic soil. A confident, flowing artist album, it’s the type of release that can only stem from years of experience and near constant immersion within electronic music culture. Born in Siena, raised in Naples but growing up as an artist in London, Davide Squillace follows in a long line of international musicians adopted by the British capital as one of it’s very own.  Returning to Italy with a new found zeal from the European metropolis Davide quickly found himself the name on peoples lips both at home and abroad as he quickly became one of the hottest acts on the scene playing at some of the worlds coolest nightspots. 

Now living in Barcelona, he runs This and That Lab, a unique fusion of label and think tank combining music, art and culture used as a platform for Davide and other like minded artists to develop creative projects in music, visual art, design, fashion and writing. He also forms one third of electronic super group Better Lost Stupid alongside scene luminaries Martin Buttrich & Matthias Tanzmann who delivered several of our favourite performances of 2014. 

So with a big year ahead beginning with a hotly anticipated appearance at London’s Fire for Saved Records first showcase of 2015 January 31st we thought it was about time we had Davide drop a mix for our podcast series. Check it out now!

Italian techno don Davide Squillace, has joined forces with experimental indie outfit PLUGGER, for a new techno EP that’s set to blow your socks off!

Tipped for release on Squillace’s own imprint on 23rd March, ‘Re_Cycle#1’ might come as a surprise to diehard fans of This And That – it’s considerably more “out there” than most of the label’s previous catalogue. The risk appears to have paid off for Squillace, with the producer and DJ reworking PLUGGER’s brand of psychedelic rock for the dance floor, cue dark and broody techno for the early morning hours!

Hey Davide! Where in the world are you?

“Right now, I'm in Barcelona between the office and the studio, and getting ready for the weekend.”

How did your collaboration with PLUGGER kick off?

“I met Alex Braga, the man behind Plugger, two summers ago in Ibiza and was amazed by his multidisciplinary artistic approach, the concept of PLUGGER, plus the power and psychedelia of the music, as well as his impressive multimedia live show. Plus, we got along very well immediately. It's amazing how people that have the same view in life are drawn to each other among thousands, even if they don't know each other.”

What's the story behind ‘Re_Cycle#1’?

“This And That is more than a label, it's a factory for multitalented artists to grow and expand their boundaries. ‘Re_Cycle#1’ is not only my first collaboration with PLUGGER and their debut on the clubbing scene, it is the beginning of an artistic journey into something different, made of groovy music, stunning videos, impressive shows, sculptures, pictures, technology all to serve one concept: how to reach into the infinite inside the finiteness of our boundaries. PLUGGER might be the answer!”

Tell us a little about This And That?

““She” follows no rules, is out of stereotypes, and has interacted with the arts since the beginning, but is – of course – music oriented, she’s all about releasing good music! (This And That) is not a “send us your promo label”, we really fall in love with the artists (that) we decide to sign and we consider them part of a family. It’s also a way of pushing out our passion for art and design. The first ten covers (for the label) are designed by very important contemporary artists – people like Christian Flamm, Piero Golia and Gavin Russom – and we try to support every release with a video - you can see these on our vimeo channel. At the end of the day, we really like to create, make the process funnier! Our slogan is: “draw music, play arts”.”

Plans for 2015? Tours, dates?

“I have a very crazy, special year ahead and a non-stop schedule! I’m leaving for Miami soon and then a North and South American tour after that. From there, I’m coming back for the Ibiza openings, then Sonar (in Barcelona) and then the summer! I’m working on my “Telemaco” album, it’s not 4/4 music, and some very cool collaborations, like the one with Marcelo Burlon, a great Italian fashion designer. Also working with my partners to develop my party brand!”

Davide Squillace’s new This and That imprint will launch with a three track twelve inch entitled ‘Manifesto.’ The EP sees the label delivering two brand new productions from the This and That boss himself in addition to a collaboration between Davide and Mexican singer, Alex Nazar. The three tracks explore the kind of genre-defying, blend of club atmospheres and emotions that This and That will stand for. This and That Lab will combine music, art and culture to provide a platform for like-minded artists to develop a host of creative projects. The first outlet of the Lab will be music and it is with ‘Manifesto’ that we welcome you to This and That.

‘Pieces of You’ is a bass-driven tech-house cut that comes with plenty of murky atmospherics. Deftly whispered vocals waft over a dense bottom end whilst synth swabs and FX create an unfamiliar but intoxicating soundscape. On the flip, Davide enlists the services of Alex Nazar, the Mexican born but LA based singer for rock band, Delta Wave. Showcasing the pair’s more pop-influenced sensibilities, the track is stripped back, allowing the vocal to take the lead over the underlying deep and rolling bassline. A host of curious sounds and tones in the background inject further personality into what is another inimitable track from the EP. ‘Morning Smile’ is the most laidback of the three, opening amid chiming melodies and a punchy beat. Proving Davide’s skills as a composer, the track builds with a subtle patience towards the colourful yet powerful sound that fills the entire track.

The artwork for the first single is provided by pioneering Italian artist Piero Golia. Having worked across a number of platforms throughout a revered career, Piero Golia drew This and That towards his work with a natural tendency towards flair and audacity. Having previously smashed a full-size passenger bus to fit into a fair booth in addition to producing a shiny metal real size unicorn from the leftovers of his destroyed car, the artist is someone who has never adhered to convention. Argentine artist Gaston Liberto’s work has been transformed into a captivating video by Chilean Gonzalo Tugas which you can see here http://vimeo.com/38582218

This and That return for their second release with a four track, vinyl release from Davide Squillace and Philip Bader. Wild Things finds the pair settling into the groove with a brace of deep and hypnotic cuts that combine an underground club aesthetic with an intoxicating, druggy funk. Remixes of each track come from Italian Carola Pisaturo and Fuse resident Enzo Siragusa.

‘Wild Things’ mixes subtle melodies, grumbling bass and rolling beats to create a sinister yet energetic slab of tech-house. A powerful bottom end provides the backbone as curious FX and sparse vocals supply the hook. The effortless groove interplays perfectly with the intense atmosphere that burns and smokes below. Davide and Philip team up with American vocalist Big Bully for a bouncy, house strut on ‘Good Luck on the Romance Thing.’ Full of character, the track moves with attitude as punchy beats drive the melodic bassline on. Big Bully’s seductive vocals inject even more personality, making this a truly inimitable tune. The digital package will also include bonus track ‘So Close So Far’ which throws jazzier sounds in amongst churning bass and crisp drums.

Carola Pisaturo delivers the remix of ‘Wild Things’ adding real warmth to the original track without losing any of its passion. Her idiosyncratic fluid grooves roll beneath wonderfully quirky synth work to provide the kind of flair that has become synonymous with Pisaturo’s work.  ‘Good Luck on the Romance Thing’ gets reworked by Enzo Siragusa, founder and resident of Fuse. The Londoner turns in a dancefloor minded remix that twists the vocals and packs more pump into the 4/4s before building tension with escalating synths.

The artwork for the release this time around is provided by the impassioned Napolitan artist Lorenzo Scotto Di Luzio.  Now living in Berlin, Lorenzo has worked on wide range of media including sculpture, installation, photography, animation, music and video, building himself a reputation as one of Europe’s most interesting contemporary artists. This and That’s enigmatic back catalogue is enhanced once again on their fourth release; this time by the formidable trio of Davide Squillace, Guti and Carl Cox.

Following on from the success of their 2011 collaboration, ‘That Ginger Ponytail’, good friends Davide Squillace and Guti got in the studio together for another trailblazing session behind the desk. Seemingly having even more fun than last time around, the pair clearly enjoyed bringing out the eccentricities of each other’s personalities on this track. The result is a record that is both fun and groovy; underground yet still insatiably infectious. ‘The Other Side Of Hustler’ is built around a wildly loose and funky bassline that underpins the entire track. There’s a real fluidity to the tune, due in no small part to the producers’ deft ability at allowing the deep bassline to run with freedom alongside some untamed drumming whilst also retaining the track’s clear narrative. 

On the flip, This and That are delighted to welcome Carl Cox into the family with his dope remix of the title track. Stripping things back somewhat, Carl replaces the funk of the original with a building sense of tension, constructed with dub-like bass stabs. The subtle groove works towards a climax that although threatens with skewered synths and crisp hi-hats, never actually spills over.

Galleria Fonti’s Birgit Megerle provides the intriguing artwork for this release. The Berlin based artist has won wide acclaim for her abstract and passionate style, an aesthetic that is on display as  she joins the This and That family with this great piece.

DAVIDE SQUILLACE’s career title is constantly evolving. A label boss,
art creative and renowned DJ & producer in his own right, Davide has the
ability to express himself audibly and visually through the different
platforms he has created over the years. Since establishing his music
career over a decade ago, Davide’s dynamic sound continues to light up
and inspire dancefloors, spanning over many continents. Constantly
pushing the boundaries of electronic music, his sound is an eloquent mix
of techno, dance, indie, instrumental and downtempo beats. His side
project, Better Lost Than Stupid sees Davide collaborate with fellow
revered DJ’s: Martin Buttrich and Matthias Tanzmann. Also passionate
about art and culture, Davide established two creative brands and artist
collectives, This And That and Blender.
