Davide Squillace - A Walk Around [Telemaco, 1998]

Born in Siena, raised in Naples but growing up as an artist in London, Davide Squillace follows in a long line of international musicians adopted by the British capital as one of it’s very own.  Returning to Italy with a new found zeal from the European metropolis Davide quickly found himself the name on peoples lips both at home and abroad as he quickly became one of the hottest acts on the scene playing at some of the worlds coolest nightspots. 

Now living in Barcelona, he runs This and That Lab, a unique fusion of label and think tank combining music, art and culture used as a platform for Davide and other like minded artists to develop creative projects in music, visual art, design, fashion and writing. He also forms one third of electronic super group Better Lost Stupid alongside scene luminaries Martin Buttrich & Matthias Tanzmann who delivered several of our favourite performances of 2014. 

So with a big year ahead beginning with a hotly anticipated appearance at London’s Fire for Saved Records first showcase of 2015 January 31st we thought it was about time we had Davide drop a mix for our podcast series. Check it out now!

Italian techno don Davide Squillace, has joined forces with experimental indie outfit PLUGGER, for a new techno EP that’s set to blow your socks off!

Tipped for release on Squillace’s own imprint on 23rd March, ‘Re_Cycle#1’ might come as a surprise to diehard fans of This And That – it’s considerably more “out there” than most of the label’s previous catalogue. The risk appears to have paid off for Squillace, with the producer and DJ reworking PLUGGER’s brand of psychedelic rock for the dance floor, cue dark and broody techno for the early morning hours!

Hey Davide! Where in the world are you?

“Right now, I'm in Barcelona between the office and the studio, and getting ready for the weekend.”

How did your collaboration with PLUGGER kick off?

“I met Alex Braga, the man behind Plugger, two summers ago in Ibiza and was amazed by his multidisciplinary artistic approach, the concept of PLUGGER, plus the power and psychedelia of the music, as well as his impressive multimedia live show. Plus, we got along very well immediately. It's amazing how people that have the same view in life are drawn to each other among thousands, even if they don't know each other.”

What's the story behind ‘Re_Cycle#1’?

“This And That is more than a label, it's a factory for multitalented artists to grow and expand their boundaries. ‘Re_Cycle#1’ is not only my first collaboration with PLUGGER and their debut on the clubbing scene, it is the beginning of an artistic journey into something different, made of groovy music, stunning videos, impressive shows, sculptures, pictures, technology all to serve one concept: how to reach into the infinite inside the finiteness of our boundaries. PLUGGER might be the answer!”

Tell us a little about This And That?

““She” follows no rules, is out of stereotypes, and has interacted with the arts since the beginning, but is – of course – music oriented, she’s all about releasing good music! (This And That) is not a “send us your promo label”, we really fall in love with the artists (that) we decide to sign and we consider them part of a family. It’s also a way of pushing out our passion for art and design. The first ten covers (for the label) are designed by very important contemporary artists – people like Christian Flamm, Piero Golia and Gavin Russom – and we try to support every release with a video - you can see these on our vimeo channel. At the end of the day, we really like to create, make the process funnier! Our slogan is: “draw music, play arts”.”

Plans for 2015? Tours, dates?

“I have a very crazy, special year ahead and a non-stop schedule! I’m leaving for Miami soon and then a North and South American tour after that. From there, I’m coming back for the Ibiza openings, then Sonar (in Barcelona) and then the summer! I’m working on my “Telemaco” album, it’s not 4/4 music, and some very cool collaborations, like the one with Marcelo Burlon, a great Italian fashion designer. Also working with my partners to develop my party brand!”

Anything else we should know?

“Only a month to go before the new born ;)”

Capturing the essence of Ibiza, title track ‘Fallin’ on You’ hits with tribal percussions and a  heady groove. DC10 favourite David Squillace picks up the pace with his remix and Riva Starr teams up with DJ Pierre for ‘Acid Train’, a funked-up ride of sonic sounds.

Naples native Riva Starr and founder of Snatch! Records has released on the most esteemed underground labels, from Dirtybird and Saved to Hot Creations. His famed 'Rechunk' re-edits have given his fail safe touch to names like from Daft Punk and London Grammar. Collaborator Santos aka Sante Pucello Italian producer and DJ is a respected artist with four albums under his belt and releases on the likes of Saved, Snatch!, Desolat and Crosstown Rebels.

Part of the Better Lost Than Stupid power team alongside Matthias Tanzmann and Martin Buttrich, Davide Squillace is one of the biggest recognized names in the industry and a regular at Circo Loco.  Quintessential Acid House producer DJ Pierre has produced more than fifty house anthems ranging from Phuture's ‘Acid Trax’, ‘The Creator’ and ‘Your Old Friend’ to Photon Inc.'s ‘Generate Power’.

13 & 14 yr olds every Saturday in East Berlin on Radio DT64

I stumbled back to the future, collecting over 5000 songs
on YouTube, learning for the first time the artists behind
the songs we heard almost 25 years ago.

The forthcoming trilogy is the result of 18 month
of building edits from YouTube recordings and stitching
them together off-line. I could not include every song,
nor indeed even the entire tracks from this small period
until 1993, so this is my personal history of electronic
music arriving in Berlin.

This trilogy will not be sold, it was a labor of love,
born of nostalgia and made for sharing.

Paul Kalkbrenner: Back To The Future - Part 2

There's not a day goes by where we don't find ourselves thinking about just how much fun Bristol's biggest house-head Eats Everything is. On our glummer days we daydream about stepping into the bloke's shoes, just for an evening, and experiencing the thrill of smashing through chunky cut after chunky cut to huge, adoring crowds. Sadly it's never going to happen, so we'll just have to keep tapping him up for exclusive tunes so we can share them with you.

Today, we're delighted to be sliding the premier of a new club-banger from the Edible man. "Chitter Chatter (Dub Version)" is a rip-roaring, steely, clattering belter taken from a brand new EP on Pets Recordings, the label owned by Polish duo Catz N' Dogz. 

In addition to Eats' steely slammer, the release features fantastic material from Stefano Ritteri, Walker & Royce, and Kim Ann Foxman, making it the best four pack we've purchased since we stepped out of the local offie last week with a full-to-the-brim blue bag. And we promise that ​Home Is Where the Pool Is 2 ​will leave you feeling better than a stomach full of super fizzy lager.

Green Velvet Tomorrowland 2012

This and That return for their second release with a four track, vinyl release from Davide Squillace and Philip Bader. Wild Things finds the pair settling into the groove with a brace of deep and hypnotic cuts that combine an underground club aesthetic with an intoxicating, druggy funk. Remixes of each track come from Italian Carola Pisaturo and Fuse resident Enzo Siragusa.

‘Wild Things’ mixes subtle melodies, grumbling bass and rolling beats to create a sinister yet energetic slab of tech-house. A powerful bottom end provides the backbone as curious FX and sparse vocals supply the hook. The effortless groove interplays perfectly with the intense atmosphere that burns and smokes below. Davide and Philip team up with American vocalist Big Bully for a bouncy, house strut on ‘Good Luck on the Romance Thing.’ Full of character, the track moves with attitude as punchy beats drive the melodic bassline on. Big Bully’s seductive vocals inject even more personality, making this a truly inimitable tune. The digital package will also include bonus track ‘So Close So Far’ which throws jazzier sounds in amongst churning bass and crisp drums.

Carola Pisaturo delivers the remix of ‘Wild Things’ adding real warmth to the original track without losing any of its passion. Her idiosyncratic fluid grooves roll beneath wonderfully quirky synth work to provide the kind of flair that has become synonymous with Pisaturo’s work.  ‘Good Luck on the Romance Thing’ gets reworked by Enzo Siragusa, founder and resident of Fuse. The Londoner turns in a dancefloor minded remix that twists the vocals and packs more pump into the 4/4s before building tension with escalating synths.

The artwork for the release this time around is provided by the impassioned Napolitan artist Lorenzo Scotto Di Luzio.  Now living in Berlin, Lorenzo has worked on wide range of media including sculpture, installation, photography, animation, music and video, building himself a reputation as one of Europe’s most interesting contemporary artists. Here, he delivers a special drawing for This and That. Director Simona Lianza has also provided this video for the release, presenting the art of ‘doing candies.’ https://vimeo.com/47262970

This and That’s enigmatic back catalogue is enhanced once again on their fourth release; this time by the formidable trio of Davide Squillace, Guti and Carl Cox.

Following on from the success of their 2011 collaboration, ‘That Ginger Ponytail’, good friends Davide Squillace and Guti got in the studio together for another trailblazing session behind the desk. Seemingly having even more fun than last time around, the pair clearly enjoyed bringing out the eccentricities of each other’s personalities on this track. The result is a record that is both fun and groovy; underground yet still insatiably infectious. ‘The Other Side Of Hustler’ is built around a wildly loose and funky bassline that underpins the entire track. There’s a real fluidity to the tune, due in no small part to the producers’ deft ability at allowing the deep bassline to run with freedom alongside some untamed drumming whilst also retaining the track’s clear narrative. 

On the flip, This and That are delighted to welcome Carl Cox into the family with his dope remix of the title track. Stripping things back somewhat, Carl replaces the funk of the original with a building sense of tension, constructed with dub-like bass stabs. The subtle groove works towards a climax that although threatens with skewered synths and crisp hi-hats, never actually spills over.

Galleria Fonti’s Birgit Megerle provides the intriguing artwork for this release. The Berlin based artist has won wide acclaim for her abstract and passionate style, an aesthetic that is on display as  she joins the This and That family with this great piece.
