London's @lorainejames is as experimental as electronic artists get. She doesn't just make hard to categorise music, she makes music for which there are often no words. Depending on your mood, her sounds can suit either full-on dance floor workouts or reflective home listens. That has been the case across two standout albums on Hyperdub, both of which explore vulnerability and identity across tracks that fizz with ideas and energy.  The most recent, Reflection back in June, came with snippets of interior monologue. They lay bare James's most intimate feelings while the beats around her continue to act as something of a safety blanket. 

This week's rule-breaking mix features a number of Loraine's tunes including the unnamed and exclusive opener, plus a flurry of beats from peers like FaltyDL, object blue, Squarepusher and Djrum. They make for a full body workout that twitches your every synapse one minute then sink you into a deeply seductive club sound the next. The transitions from hyper-polished and futuristic rhythms to live jazz drums, or icy dub to glitchy IDM, would seem impossible on paper, but in practice, they are executed perfectly.

@adab arrived at a love of electronic music on the dance floor of queer-run techno party In Training in their native Cleveland. Before long, they went on to established themselves as a DJ who plays electric sets of house, techno and club beats as part of a constant quest to "seek the unifying elements in the world and themselves." The Pittsburgh resident and radio regular is now half of Cleveland party Heaven is in You and has an international profile that is only set to grow as they continue to confound expectations with each new set. 

That starts with this week's mix, which is an other-worldly trip into genre-less electronics. Dense and cinematic ambiance and sound design set the opening scene - it's a world of searching synths and shadowy alien life forms in which a skeletal rhythm eventually appears. Deconstructed dub, club and jungle flavour the ensuing grooves which are heads down and dark. They evoke all manner of dystopian futures and make for a brilliantly unconventional ride.

"This mix was closing Supercamp festival’s last ever edition, from 6 to 8pm on a sunday. Therefore we thought we do a reverse journey of intensity, starting with 140 pressure taking our time to slow all the way down to 120 during the 2hours - hitting 130 with mellow dub techno cuts or classic-feel ukg, and ending with a series of (very) warm closing tracks upon closing tracks. You’ll know by now that Bambi and Beatrice M. are pretty different in their approach to DJing, which makes it all the more interesting and fun for them to find the lovely middle ground they pleasantly settle in during their b2bs. "This set is a recording from my closing set on NYE at London’s Venue MOT. As someone who is probably just as in love with curating as I am with DJing, I get really excited when I connect with a line up & understand what role I might have to play in the unfolding of the night. This one had a bit of everything, Djrum / mama snake / priori / jon k / jossy mitsu & I really wanted to bring something special together to reflect the array of sounds across the night whilst also keeping it quite fun and nostalgic. A nod to that special energy that we all feel on New Years Eve where everyone wants to hug their friends and tell them they love them. The set starts with a fun peak time energy before melting away into some slower sludgy sounds. By the end of the night there were only a few people left floating around the dance floor, everyone with their heads down and eyes closed, just swaying their bodies. My favourite time of night."

andy has such a distinctive sound, it’s so easy to recognise one of his tracks in a mix as he bridges together his mexican and jamaican roots through a futuristic style that spans across techno and dub leaning towards rich textural influences. it’s honestly quite hard for me to go a mix or radio show without including one of his andy’s tracks. his output is strong with his first release out in 2009 and has been steady ever since! whether that’s self-released, via his imprint mole audio, that he runs alongside didier dlb and where you’ll find collaborations with lee scratch perry and gavsborg, via labels such as ssensorial and discos movimiento or his ambient works which have led to andy performing in musuems, art galleries and festivals like mutek. there’s a touch of andy martin in every corner.

ephemeral objects is a DJ, VJ, producer, and digital artist who thrives at the intersection of ambient introspection, driving rhythms, and textural lushness.
