On this Saturday’s Urban Smooth – (01st February) I’m kicking off the show’s 5th Year Anniversary with a bang!

This week I’m speaking with Tim McGeary, Scott Simon, Jim Nevius about a 40 plus year journey in the music industry as well as some fun stories from the downtown scene of early 80’s New York. These guys began their musical collaboration in the ground-breaking Progressive Punk band, Neighbours and Allies.
The act attracted major attention and was voted one of the top bands in New York City in 1980. After disbanding in 1981, Scott Simon went on to become a founding member of Our Daughter’s Wedding, an electronic music trio that took Europe by storm with the hit, “Lawnchairs”, afterward recording two seminal albums for EMI. Meanwhile Jim Nevius formed the band, Neeva, and released an album on MSI Records, featuring the hit, “Blue Star”, while McGeary joined The Rescue, penning the songs for their EP “Messages” and “Tell Me Now”. However, the three regrouped as Neighbor and Allies again in the mid 80’s, signing with Island Records. Since then, Simon, Nevius, and McGeary have seen their songs featured in films and television series. As for the spirit of the band, New Trees represents hope and the desire of the three members to re-imagine songwriting with a purpose: to spread a message of conservation by way of their 8 song LP, mastered for Vinyl by John Ashton, formerly of the Psychedelic Furs.

Urban Smooth 01st March 2025

We all know the feeling: falling in love with someone again, but wounds still fresh from a heartbreak. Or you find yourself falling in love with someone who you KNOW is not going to be good for you, repeating past patterns of choosing the wrong lovers. I wrote this from a desperate place of truly wanting to be saved and not fall in love, or stay in love, with a specific partner. I felt my very life depended on it and that's no overstatement. Joni Mitchell's "Help Me" came to mind as this song was coming out. It's very old school. Yeah, they don't make 'em like this anymore. I also thought about the songs of Johnny Hartman, with, and without John Coltrane. I suppose Mel Torme, Chet Baker, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall are in the mix too. Thanks for listening. Hope you dig.
