In no particular order, this is a playlist of some of the songs I've written through the years that tell a story, about a person or an event.

The first 14 songs are related to the struggle against fascism, mainly in Europe, in the 1930's and 1940's.  The rest are songs very directly related to the struggle against fascists and fascism since then, as it pertains to the phenomenon popularly referred to as Antifa.  Not included are the hundreds of related songs I've written about what we might call American fascism -- songs about American apartheid, genocide, our culture of police violence, racism, mass incarceration, etc., are to be found in different playlists, with the exception here of "State House Lawn," because the killer is a bona fide fascist.  I'm not really sure where these lines are, as is often the case with picking playlists, but hopefully this one makes sense, and is of potential interest in particular to those interested in history, the study of fascism, and especially for anyone who has been following the ongoing dialog between me and my critics, who say I'm sympathetic with fascism.

These are all songs I haven't yet recorded in a studio.  All but two of them were written since my last album recording project in Ireland in October, 2019.  I re-recorded most of these songs on February 16th, 2020, with the aim of getting a better recording quality than I had gotten originally for most of them.  Then I boosted the signal by 4 or 5 db for most of the tracks.  The only one of these songs that I didn't record with a single USB mic plugged into my laptop is "Behind These Prison Doors."  That song is the audio from the video we made in front of Belmarsh Prison in London, England.

I can barely afford the rent in my apartment at the moment, and I just put out an album recently, so I'm not thinking much about another studio recording project, except that it would be good, for a lot of different reasons, to record these songs in a studio, with other musicians, and make a real album of high enough quality to fit in on the streaming platforms and get listened to.  If these songs are going to have their optimal impact, they need to be recorded in a studio, and some of them, like songs about 2020 electoral campaigns, for example, really would be best off recorded very soon. Iceland, 2008

A little background to the refugee crisis on the US/Mexico border.  These refugees were "made in the USA."  The least we could do is let them in to the country that destroyed theirs.  Also international law is on their side, but the Constitutional law professor in the White House and most members of both parties of Congress don't seem to care about that.

It's a pattern, ever present in the places that don't strictly regulate the abilities of the rich to make more money at the expense of everybody else.  Currently one of many cities that the wealthy developers are trying to destroy is my latest home town of Portland, Oregon.

Turning away refugees is unfortunately a long tradition in the US.  But the propaganda represented by the Statue of Liberty is really lovely stuff.  If only it were much more real.

Although I wrote it during the current (July 2014) Israeli invasion of Gaza, this is a song about how life in Gaza is under "peacetime."

If we deported the billionaires and nationalized their wealth, the rest of the US could be twice as well-off at least.  A much better deal than whatever benefit we're supposed to get from deporting our neighbors!

ICE agents taking orders directly from the top and disappearing a student activist with no warrant, no due process, canceling his green card and holding him incommunicado in an unknown location, this is what's happening in the USA right now.

The point, obviously -- and openly stated by our government officials -- is to make the USA such a terrible place to seek asylum that people would rather face torture or death or hunger at home, than to even try to leave.

Among the various absurdities is Trump saying Los Angeles looked like "occupied territory."  It is, of course -- since at least 1846.  But he probably wouldn't get the irony.

The Pilgrims Were Immigrants, Too

When I was very young, in New York City, I had a babysitter/nanny named Lola Aglialoro who lived on 172 West 107th Street.  I still remember her address, because I used to write her so many letters.  I visited her every so often as an adult, too, until her death in 2002.  I found out more about her then.  And today I wrote a song.

This should be a campaign song for at least 27 US governors, among other xenophobic idiots, who, well before Trump's election, said they wouldn't accept any Syrian refugees in their states.

For Omid, who died in an Australian concentration camp in Nauru.  Omid's wife is still in indefinite detention for the crime of being a refugee who had to flee her country quickly, without waiting for papers.  She wishes to remain anonymous, so I changed both of their names, since their story bears a lot of similarity to the ancient Persian poem anyway.

For Mawda Shawri, a two-year-old Kurdish girl who was killed for being in a van full of refugees with a driver who wouldn't stop the van when the police wanted him to.  The obvious message here from the Belgian cops, in case you missed it, is that the lives of refugees don't matter at all.

Virtually the entire western media is spouting the most outrageous propaganda, as it often does when it's most needed to tell the truth instead.  It's not that everything's fine in Venezuela -- it's most definitely not.  But that is mainly due to foreign and domestic sabotage of the Venezuelan economy.

On April 18th, 2012, Khader Adnan was released from an Israeli prison after being on hunger strike for 66 days. He was objecting, among other things, to Israel’s policy of indefinite detention without trial, which still continues — but only for Palestinians.

The First Intifada

On April 23rd, 1971, veterans of the war in Vietnam carried out a series of operations in Washington, DC, actions involving thousands of recently-returned soldiers, one of which involved the depositing on the White House lawn of 700 medals veterans had received for their service in the military.

Ever heard about the act of war that predicated the Japanese Empire's bombing raid on the Pearl Harbor Navy base in 1941? A US naval blockade on Japanese oil imports from Indonesia that had been going on for months, threatening to strangle the Japanese economy.

No One Is Illegal

One of the lesser-known details about the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War is how badly the Republican refugees were treated in France, after they fled over the border, running for their lives.  The Vichy authorities, after the Nazi occupation, were worse.  But for 2,200 of the refugees in France, the fate of their comrades would be avoided, as Pablo Neruda and the government of Chile at the time had arranged for a cargo ship, the SS Winnipeg.

Among the most eloquent of America's political prisoners is from Texas.  He is serving a fifty-year sentence for nothing more than a blatantly obvious act of self-defense against a murder attempt by a racist cop.  The cop even admitted as much -- an admission which later mysteriously changed, of course.  Alvaro is up for parole, at least potentially, in 2021.
