The Great Mystery is the latest full length album by the Desert Dwellers, and it is truly a jet setting piece of work. The 12-track collection was predominately recorded on the road, in airports, airplanes, and hotel rooms and finished in multiple studios in multiple countries. Even the live recordings were done with various musicians and singers from around the world in rooms ranging from Berlin to Santa Cruz over the past 2 years. This release is a special one, because it’s the first fully realized album of all original music that Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe have produced together, even though it is the 8th full album in the Desert Dwellers catalog, along with countless singles, eps, and remixes. 

The title of the album is derived from a Terrance McKenna quote, “Life is like a moment, we’re born out of a mystery, and we die into a mystery.” The duo notes, “Life and Death are great mysteries and we felt that was a pretty amazing theme to go with.” The album also features a talented cast of collaborators including Rick Hunter playing Oud, singer Megan Chandler, violinist HÄANA, Ixchel Prisma, Anuradha Genrich, and a host of others. The duo also worked with notable engineers including Torin Goodnight (Bird Of Prey), Benjamin Last (Temple Step Project), Yulu Fershtat (Perfect Stranger), and James Lumb (of Electric Skychurch Fame) who did analog summing that really transformed the sound quality of the album. 

The diverse recording locations are just as mixed as the albums vast range of musical inspirations. The pair’s musical palate spans from classical world music to psychedelic rock, all forms of hypnotic deep electronic music, reggae and dub, to pop and everything in between. The duo enthusiastically state, “Its always been a dream to create an album that embodied many of the styles we resonate most with, and The Great Mystery is that album!” They add, “When it comes to electronic music we have always refused to be ‘genrefied’ and this album goes on the complete journey from our classic tribal downtempo grooves to tribal techno, psychedelic trance, dubstep and ambient, all under one unified sound.”

A project unlike any other comes to Desert Trax this fall. Between 2009 and 2012, psychedelic bass producer Twin Shape created but left unfinished three songs that tied him inextricably to a certain time and place. As the years went on, these pieces remained rough and untouched, until he sought the help of three fellow producers to help him complete these songs.
The result is the 'Auxiliatus' EP. From the Latin to support, Alterra, Shwamp , and COAM stepped in to give Twin Shape distance, perspective, and help to revisit these original creations and give them a contemporary feel on Seeded, D&N and Glimpse, respectively. Three tightly wound compositions that have spanned nearly a decade since their inception now come to life with throbbing low end and alien implications. A strong recommendation for fans of Bird of Prey, Phutureprimitive, and Ott.

Standout Desert Trax contributor Key-G steps in for a remix of the Alterra collab, Seeded, to round out this 4-track set. The Auxiliatus EP is finally available September 13th.

Billboard summed it up best, “David Starfire brings a unique perspective to EDM.”

​David has performed at prominent festivals such as Winter Music Conference, Coachella, Outside Lands, Envision, Burning Man, Eclipse, and Lightning in a Bottle. He’s been direct support for the likes of Skrillex, CloZee, Tipper and collaborated with top artists such as Afrika Bambaataa, Sizzla, Alex Grey, Ram Dass, Alan Watts, Ooah (The Glitch Mob), Sidecar Tommy (Beats Antique), William Close, and the Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Chaytanya. David has released 7 albums and 13 EPs in the last 15 years as well as various singles and remixes. David’s songs are featured on several TV, cable, movies, and video games. Some highlights include the movie Sold (Emma Thompson as exec producer), Lie to Me (FOX), Outsourced (NBC), Live with Kelly Ripa (ABC), ESPN2, Fox Sports, MTV, MTV2, Fuse, Showtime, HBO, EA sports, and a Right Guard commercial. His songs are featured on several music compilations including Sony, Lonely Planet, Red Bull, Craig’s List, and his song “Shout it Out” was in regular rotation at Starbucks. 

David has been producing music for meditation and psychedelic assisted therapy for many years. He's the music facilitator for high profile meditation retreats with the likes of Deepak Chopra, Robert Thurman, Richard Schwartz (IFS), Sunny Strasburg, Gita Vaid, and others. David worked with Phil Wolfson (MAPS researcher, The Ketamine Papers) on the K Dome virtual Burning Man Project. He helped to develop the TRIPP meditation phone app plus contributed music and was the main curator of the music content including well known names such as Moby, Ram Dass, Alan Watts, Desert Dwellers, Dirtwire and others.. In 2023, David released a highly acclaimed album with meditations by Ram Dass. He's also the head of music and sound at TRIPP VR, the #1 meditation platform in virtual reality. In 2020, David co-founded PsyAssist with Sunny Strasburg, a VR and Phone app that features music and guided meditation for psychedelic therapy.

David started his musical journey playing guitar at 8, then playing in the jazz band and marching band in high school. In his 20’s he was signed to various bands and eventually fell in love with the fusion of world music with EDM. He comes from a musical family in New Orleans. His grandfather Oscar Rouzan, was a well known jazz musician and his cousin, Wanda Rouzan, known as the “The sweetheart of New Orleans music”.
