Disquiet Junto

I’ve got another delicious treat for you this morning courtesy of NAHAL Recordings. If you’re still not familiar with this French label, curated and operated by Frédéric D. Oberland and Paul Régimbeau, allow me to remind you of the duo’s very own project, FOUDRE! for which I have run this track premiere of “Black Swan Theory I“, as well as this “Chimères (pour ondes Martenot)” from Christine Ott, and Oberland’s “E Quindi Uscimmo A Riveder Le Stelle“. Right… So you can say that I’m a fan… Today we’re introduced to Matthias Puech, who previously released with Hands in the Dark, Hisolat, and Obsolete Future, migrating over to NAHAL for his latest exploration of emptiness, an album, appropriately titled, A Geography Of Absence, “sketching cartography of the invisible, as introspective as unpredictable, in a unique sensory whirlwind.” At the heart of this composition are two Eurorack modules made by 4ms – the Ensemble Oscillator, which features Phase Modulation and Wave-Shaping alongside its FM and Additive Synthesis functions; and a Tapographic Delay, manipulating audio into “complex rhythmic structures, meshes of organic textures, and lush harmonic mille-feuilles.” The sound is raw, dark, and full of disquiet, raising the goosebumps along tepid flesh. Slowly guiding you down the empty corridors of lost and forgotten, Puech revives all your senses and enticing for more. Today I am featuring the opening track to his seven-piece LP, hoping to get you excited…

"A researcher in theoretical computer science and an engineer at GRM, Matthias Puech constructs a dialogue between synthetic music and field recording, capturing sounds that surround him and creating his own sonic language with the help of synthesizers he designs and develops. Playing with time, space and matter in an approach similar to that of musique concrète, Puech combines ambient and noise, floating sounds and electroacoustic experimentations, thus shaking up our listening perspective, which finds itself walking through a parallel universe, strata after strata, sequence after sequence."

The 'focus on' programs highlight artists or initiatives that are related to the theme of the 7th edition of the Festival Oscillation ::: The Weather.
This radio feature is about the australian sound artist Felicity Mangan.
Her investigations and works are primarily influenced by the biomes of wetlands, waterways, and soil. She combines field recordings, electroacoustic composition, and electronic music techniques to create immersive, quasi-bioacoustic music aided by digital audio tools. Her compositions have been presented in multichannel installations, live performances, site-specific settings, and published works.

Included in The Wire Tapper 44, the CD compilation included with the August 2017 edition of The Wire.

On the eve of the first anniversary of tsss tapes, Francesco Covarino has assembled a mix uniting fragments from all nine of the label's tapes into one exciting journey. Their debut release was the compilation Free Percussion, which includes tracks from Claire Rousay, Will Guthrie, Ted Byrnes, and many others, an impressive catalogue of contemporary sonic research happening in this area. Subsequent releases have brought artists into conversation with each other, prompting new and fruitful relationships, beginning with Masayuki Imanishi and Marco Serrato, Graham Dunning and Edward Lucas, and Danny Clay and Matt Atkins.  But the label's growing discography also includes solo releases from Rie Nakajima and Dominique Vaccaro. Each release has been a fascinating document, and as the label catalogue has grown, I asked Francsco to assemble this mix so that we might share these gems with our readers. Sure to appeal to fans of Dinzu Artefacts, Patient Sounds, and Canti Magnetici.

Francesco explains:

"I wanted to give a short taste of all of our seven releases so far, plus the two upcoming tapes we are putting out at the end of February. I wanted to make a relatively short mix, so that it would not be too difficult to listen to the whole thing until the end."

I recorded a ride I took across a rattly wooden boardwalk at Neary Lagoon in Santa Cruz. I rode my bike along the boardwalk to a quiet dock in the lagoon, then took off again, only to stop suddenly. I like the mechanical delay involved with the wheels gong over the loose boards. Bump bump, clack clack.
