Belgian artist and Maloca Records founder Le Motel returns to the label for a new EP, ‘Sueños’, his most expansive work to date. Released on the 11th February, Le Motel draws from the worldly ethos of the label to bring together collaborators from the UK, Ghana, Spain and Brussels. 

Meaning dream in Spanish, ‘Sueños’ was made during the lockdown and is inspired by the fragments for dreams and the incapacity of experiencing music and life in a physical way. On Le Motel’s two solo cuts, ‘Sueños’ and ‘Talking To Drums’, the dynamic artist showcases his signature percussive driven sound. With the global influences from the collaborators, ‘Sueños’ continues to expand across heavyweight grime on ‘Love Talk Bad’ with Logan, glitchy IDM with Cabasa on ‘Libet’s Delay’, Clara! bringing reggaeton flavours to ‘Rápido’ and Bryte provides his distinctive vocals to the heavy bass rhythms of ‘Wonteeda’. 

As a music producer and film composer, Le Motel’s versatility has taken him to festivals and clubs in every direction and as a field recordist, he has ventured out to the less accessible areas of the globe to source sounds for his enriching productions. Having produced for some of Belgium’s biggest hip hop artists, Le Motel has also released on Portugal’s XXIII, LA’s TAR and New Zealand’s Cosmic Compositions. 

Launching Maloca Records in 2020, Le Motel aims to bring together a global network of makers which was highlighted on the label’s first compilation, Maloca Vol. 1. The release focused on a terrestrial and borderless percussive sound that has been bubbling in clubs and Le Motel’s orbit, featuring tracks from Nick León, OMAAR, DJ JM, Dengue Dengue Dengue, Coen, DJ N.K. and Tsongo. Maloca has also released solo EPs from Howie Lee, Farsight and more recently Griffit Vigo.

Info: Subliminal is very clearly a club record. A series of tracks in the 150/160 BPM range, anchored in a 4/4 rhythm, full throttle. Containing very few melodic elements, this is an EP anchored in the strength of rhythm. On the one hand, there is a certain familiarity with Chicago Footwork, mainly in the prevalence of certain rhythmic elements such as snare drums and the use of sliced vocal samples. On the other hand, there are also reminiscences of a certain rave aesthetic, such as punctual breaks, or basses that sometimes appear either more “subby” or more “trancy”. But let's break this down. “Pra Tirar” opens the EP with the combination of a very raw rhythmic pattern, marked by the presence of restless snare drums, with a two-note trancy bass. From time to times a break punctuates and animates the pattern. In “Jump That” the rhythmic complexity expands through the insistence on triplets. Different snare drums and sidesticks populate the rhythm that transforms around a continuous and persistent sub. The voice sample is multiplied into different slices and retriggers, which, due to the triplet sequencing, end up giving the sensation of being out of sync sometimes. “Downdale” was the track that sold us the record! Repeated snare drums and the insistence on a 4/4 boomin kick replacing the bass. Simple and efficient. “Get Down” is also driven by voice samples and their multiple slices, combined with intricate rhythmic patterns. Footwork madness in full force. “I Need What” is the most contrasting theme, as it is not based on a clear “4 to the floor”. The aesthetic here is closer to electro, with the broken kicks and the snare drum appearing on every upbeat. The bass has a lot of modeling in the filter envelope in order morphing the track which is also built around different slices of the vocal samples. A contrasting change of energy evidencing a necessary slowdown that heralds the end of a very sweaty journey. BLEID is Rave Royalty!

London-based producer Lokane returns to Nervous Horizon for the first time since 2016 EP ‘Visions’ with new five-track project, ‘WINGS’. 

Moving away from his more familiar club constructions, including tracks like ‘Body Double VIP’ — a standout on recent label compilation, ‘Nervous Horizon Volume 2’ — ‘WINGS’ was conceived with the aim of bringing US rap to the UK dance underground. 
In doing so, Lokane reached out to recruit two US heads; Chicago drill rapper Mikey Dollaz and Queens’ Dai Burger, to serve as the main voices of the record. 
Dollaz has previously worked with Planet Mu trio, Silk Road Assassins, while Burger collaborated with Darq E Freaker on 2016 single, ‘Choppin’ Necks’. In and amongst the hyper-intense 808 trap patterns and bright, colourful SFX of EP tracks like ‘Blocked’ and ‘Levels’, Lokane also delves deeper into his own sound design, veering off the drum-focused, club tool path into more conceptual, artistic spaces. Exploring rich sound and textural palettes — from cold and industrial on final track ‘Royalé’, a 
collaboration with label co-head TSVI, to wildly abstract and futuristic on ‘Blocked’ — ‘WINGS’ is a bold and ambitious record from another of Nervous Horizon’s most prized assets.
