Translation:

By the well before the gate
there stands a linden tree;
I dreamt in its shade
so many a sweet dream.

I cut into its bark
so many a loving word;
in joy and sorrow
I was ever drawn towards it.

Today I also had to travel
past in the deep night,
and there in the dark
I closed my eyes.

And its branches murmured,
as though they were calling to me:
Come here to me, friend,
here you will find your peace!

The cold winds blew
straight into my face;
the hat flew from my head,
I did not turn myself.

Now I am many hours 
distant from that place,
and always I hear it murmur:
you would have found peace there!
