An introverted guy that has a way with words, Marshall-stacked guitar tones, and a sophisticated Nashville storytelling fare—that is American multi-instrumentalist David Russell.

Born on July 3, 2000, in Nashville, Tennessee, David immersed himself in the Nashville DIY Scene. Hailing from a long line of musicians, he played in family bands—primarily country music—and collaborated with most notably his sister, Emmy Russell, and grandmother, Loretta Lynn. His father was also a songwriter, and introduced him to keystone influences like Tom Petty and the Ramones. By middle school, he was designing shirts and hosting festivals in his parents' barn. Inspired by the older kids in town, Nordista Freeze, Briston Maroney, and Vanosdale, he began producing music on his parents' laptop using GarageBand.

On Christmas Day of 2016, David started uploading original songs to SoundCloud, drawing inspiration from bands like Modern Baseball and Weezer. These uploads were playlisted as an annual "Summer Hiatus" compilation, the collection of songs David had written over the given year. No moniker—just self-titled, self-released.

In the Spring of 2018, David released his debut album, It's All for Her. This confessional guitar+vocal record was performed front-to-back for a summer before being re-recorded with his band and then teenage producer Keller Moore, stepping away from the Elliot Smith-style production of the original. Following a series of six subsequent releases, David left high school, his job at the post office, and his hometown.

On February 29, 2020, he relocated to the East Village, New York City to fully pursue his music, and get out of the Nashville Machine. By that summer, he formed alternative band the Gold Standard with multi-instrumentalist, Michael Messiah, in Flatbush, Brooklyn. For years, David cycled through jobs at coffeehouses, even Starbucks. Michael attended Brooklyn College, studying accounting and got by playing cover gigs at dive bars in Greenwich Village. They gathered buzz in 2022 and held a 52 week long residency at the Bitter End. In 2023, Billy Mannino (Oso Oso, Macseal) stepped in to record and produce “Breaking Down & Feeling Low” at Two Worlds Studio in Queens, New York.

By 2024, David has published 190+ songs on SoundCloud, written 6 albums, and has played over a hundred shows across the USA with the Gold Standard. Summer Hiatus 24’ is the most active he’s ever been, striking anthemic choruses showing his relentless passion for songwriting as his trade. He remains proudly independent, organized, and ambitious.
