High Altitude

"you don't need a dictionary to listen to this" is an instrumental EP from Midwestern singer/songwriter Davis John Patton. The EP brings together a handful of unreleased tracks with varying backgrounds and inspiration.

The first three tracks (None, i, and ii) are part of an old project originally entitled "fresh earth." The unfinished work started with the intention of writing a song based on each day of the Creation story as told in the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis. "None" covers the first two verses of Genesis before anything was created; "i" covers the first day, verses three through five; and "ii" scores day two, verses six through eight. The "fresh earth" project is (and may always be) unfinished, but thankfully the almighty God of the universe completed more than day two and was able to create this indescribable, unknowable universe that we live in.

The fourth track (Lapse) started out as more of an experiment than a song. The ticking clock heard throughout the piece was simply a challenging base to build a song around and was never intended to result in a melodic, finished song. But it did.

The fifth track (High Altitude (Instrumental)) is purely an instrumental version of the High Altitude single released in June of 2017. You can hear the full, lyrical track by Davis John Patton on NoiseTrade, Spotify, iTunes, and everywhere else.

Somewhere in My Memory

The simplest pleasures matter the most. Whether it be the dawn breaking, pouring the first cup of coffee, or enjoying a tree as it sways in the wind, the little things distinguish one day from the next. The day derives color, personality, and even magic from these nuances. Davis John Patton most certainly treasures such details. In similar fashion, his songwriting bears the eloquence of a novelist, allowing the smallest moments to leave big impressions. On his 2020 Poetry EP [Nettwerk], the troubadour uses acoustic instrumentation and atmospheric production to translate life’s idiosyncrasies into five introspective and engaging folk anthems.

“I like to find people where they are and help them see the beauty in those moments,” he says. “I’m trying to highlight the profound things happening day-to-day. We can always use more inspiration and peace.”

Born and raised in the Midwest, Davis found himself drawn to music at a young age. Mom enrolled him in piano lessons during first grade. Three years later, he picked up guitar. In between choir at church and school, he discovered Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago and embraced acoustic folk. While in college, he independently wrote and recorded the 2018 Forest Park EP, followed by 2019’s From the Garden EP [Nettwerk], which received praise from the likes of American Songwriter, Atwood Magazine and more. Even in the midst of a prolific few years, he still found the time to recognize peace around him.
