Dawn Raid presents Hocus Pocus 004A 'The Chameleon'

To quote the immortal lines used by MC Inspektah Deck in Wu-Tang Clan’s classic track ‘The Mystery of Chessboxin’... “Steamrolling !#**^! Like an eighteen wheeler with a drunk driver driving...there’s no surviving!” encapsulates the vibe of this track in a nutshell! This one is a roller of epic proportions. Initially sucking the listener in with an almost voodoo like hypnotic feel are some tribal bongos, which roll out incessantly. These take the listener on a journey as the other elements of the track begin to build the anticipation towards the drop. Upon the advent of the drop, an eerie female vox advises the listener that “The Chameleon uses the Jungle”!!! At this point, all out hardcore esque stab warfare ensues, before a steamrolling meltdown. Heavy!

Is a righteous respectful nod to all the true veteran testosterone-fuelled junglists who roam dance floors across the planet, blending those deep vibes akin to the classic rough & rude jungle sound of the early 90’s… Mr. Jungle comes heavy with a trademark classic pad & string combination, fused with cantankerous breaks that stomp & roll along with the uncompromising “dutty raw” lyrical toasting of MC B.I.C. As the track progresses the hyper intro is met with a roaring reese & bouncing 808 bass which result in a full on soundsystem workout… Heavy!

‘Amnesia’ is more of an elevating jungle track that gives a heavy nod to the amnesia house second summer of love raving heyday of the late 1980’s. Building in a very unassuming way ‘Amnesia’ injects a pure uplifting vibe to the riddim as the intro skips along! Deep soundscape like pads build the anticipation for the drop! Upon the drop, quality Dawn Raid production from a classic bygone Balearic era take the track naturally where it needs to go! Into the jungle with absolutely no compromise. Bad!

This producer has been a firm fixture for many years in DJ sets across the North West… He is now armed with dubs a plenty and ready to cement a place in the dnb scene with his high quality productions. Erbman has expressed his love of traditional rolling jungle/dnb music from the 90’s through his productions and this release is no exception! 

AA – Live & Direct

‘Live & Direct’ is a real sneak attack on the senses. Building with an instantly recognisable musical hook, you will be hypnotised by the step out nature of the intro as it breaks down in to the vox…Then out of nowhere deep rolling bass drags you full throttle into the track! Deep booming subs then combine with the rolling bass to keep your senses & internal organs resonating at full throttle whilst the track steps out in a big way! Most definitely a riddim to let the listeners know what time it is on the dancefloor! Big!

stars in the Drum & Bass scene at the moment…the mighty Bladerunner. This
collaboration has resulted in a tune that gives a strong nod to the Bristol
sound of the mid 90’s. Inspired crisp live scatty beats and Kung Fu vocals
lead us into an all out assault of face-melting, devastating and bouncy
basslines with sinister dub fx stabs and vocals. This one really does do
the business, as you would expect from a potent collaboration

HP001AA - Iscariot - Bladerunner & Dawn Raid

Dawn Raid flex their musical might for the inception of their label with this big amen roller. Lush pads and melancholic piano sets the mood raising up the temperature with massive neck snapping drums and classic deep basslines, all topped off nicely with uplifting and clash style vocal stabs. This one has real musical depth but also has the ability to destroy the dancefloor…truly reminiscent of that deeper Drum and Bass sound from the early 90’s.

A solid collection of tracks by a collection of seasoned underground artists who have made quality releases across the Jungle/Drum and Bass scenes for a while now. This EP delivers 4 deeper and darker cuts that will not disappoint and bring weight to any DJ’s set... Hocus Pocus presents... The Masters of Illusion EP Vol 3. 

A – Dawn Raid : Cretins 
Our first track from the EP comes from label heads Dawn Raid, who set the pace with this huge dark stepper. Setting the scene with a synthetic and futuristic dub style intro to neck snapping drums before the sounding of an invoking vocal hook. Upon the drop Cretins takes you into the depths of sub bass accompanied by sinister razor like synth stabs and those incredible neck snapping beats! Turning up the pressure here and there with bass phrases to make your face screw up in disgust! If you like your beats hard and dark, this one will not disappoint.

B – Microcosm : Arc
Representing out of Dublin and an underground veteran from the Manchester drum & bass scene, we are proud to bring you a cut from Microcosm! Known for his ability to create hard hitting drum and bass with a Junglist edge.  Arc comes with a classic sinister feel as we enter the intro. What ensues from the drop is nothing short of carnage with snarling basses, sliding subs and hard hitting breaks. Taking you back to the darker sound of the late 90’s, this is dark Jungle/Drum and Bass at its best.…Bad! 

C – K Jah : Deep in the Hood
Now a master in his own right with a slew of releases on some notorious labels as well as his own imprint, K Jah returns to his roots at Hocus Pocus to bless us with a slice of weight, showcasing his darker and more menacing side! Classic rollin breaks and hip hop style stabs set you up for the rap style drop. From here on in we are met with hard distorted 808’s and grinding synth bass that work their magic in screwing your face right up. Hard and rollin’…..this is Deep in the Hood!

D – Margaman : Steam Roller
Margaman makes another hard appearance on Hocus Pocus, delivering what he does best, stepping in with them road tastic uncompromising vibes! Tech style rolling beats accompany the eerie intro, setting the tone for the chest rattling bassline that follows! From there in the track steam-rolls through you with sub low intensity, whilst the eerie atmosphere maintains its presence. There is no let up as you go through the darkness on this rollercoaster of a tune….Hoods high, heads low is the state of play!

This track is one for those who like it more rough & rolling! The scene is set by a recurring rocking beat that builds nicely alongside a hooky little vocal stab straight out of a MC’s toasting arsenal! A filthy Bristol esque bassline workout then takes no prisoners as the beats & bass roll out hard to the track’s conclusion. Straight raw, tough & uncompromising.

Dawn again pull no punches with this piece of audio dynamite. Come Get Yours intros like something akin to Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees or Freddy Kruger entering the dance! The scene is set by a recurring intro that builds nicely for a true dnb DJ’s mixing pleasure. The impending doom then builds with a haunting string & vox arrangement, which really sets the tone for the drop! Upon the drop an atomic Q&A bassline workout takes no prisoners as the beats start to hard-step out & snap necks for anybody in the vicinity… you have been warned!

Dawn Raid lay the smackdown with this big amen tear out track! Not for the faint hearted! This track kicks off with searing cut-throat stabs, eerie trippy vox’s & swirling dark atmospheric pads that set the mood nicely for what’s about to ensue. Upon the drop, Dawn Raid up the temperature to dancefloor destruction level with classic 808 distorted basslines which complement the unyielding drum work… rolling out with ferocious intent! Dawn Raid’s style of DJ set can simply be referred to as straight up rinse out, with a musical edge! This is due to all the artists in the collective having a shared experience in DJ/MC performance and production spanning the past 15 years from jungle as it was back in the early 90’s, to its present day DnB format. Combined with a real passion for the music, and the scene since it’s inception in the early 90s, Dawn Raid seek to deliver productions and live performances that represent the spectrum of Jungle/DnB from its beginnings to the present day. They do not limit themselves to current trends and always encompass the genre in its many forms, from deep and rolling, to big tear out tracks… always with a strong reference to the core elements and influences of the music from it's beginning.
