Day Before Us is an emotional, ethereal and dark ambient music project formed in 2011 by the piano trained player and composer Philippe Blache. Full length releases have been published by Rage in Eden, Twilight Records, OPN and GH Records. A palette of immersive electronic textures, slowly moving melancholic piano airs, industrial noises, lyrical themes, neoclassical arrangements and discreet experimentations characterize the compositional process and the stylistic inclination. Creative strength of the project comes from reflections on timelessness, memories of a bygone era, romantic spleen and spiritual narratives. Day Before Us occasionally gives live performances and works in the context of intermedia collaborations.

« The ever sounding sea of grief » is a cathartic and spiritually uplifting musical journey. Partly abandonning the lyrical component which was central in previous releases of his musical project "Day Before Us" Philippe Blache introduces here a slight new stylistic turn. This album makes incursions within the world of avant gardism, noise ambient and modern classical minimalism with a subtle cinematic edge. It can be appreciated as a purging ritual mainly built around harrowing reverb piano key, blackened skies of droney textures, then majestic organ patterns within a foreboding sonic spectrum. Those lengthy tracks feature additional arrangements as spoken words. As for the last "Day Before Us" album to date the striking visual imagery is provided by forward-thinking artistic collaborator and multi-talented Natalie Ina. "The ever sounding sea of grief" is a thrilling and colossal poetical/musical drama of overwhelming expressive itensity.

HOW “tout est silencieux” WAS CONCEIVED AND RECORDED
I wrote, composed, arranged and performed "tout est silencieux" between April and June 2018 in my home recording studio. As usual, I haven’t decided anything before recording the new pieces: I let the melodies, the piano phrases, the ideas to come out as spontaneously as possible, each time I had the chance to be surrounded by my favourite instruments and listening to the field recordings I collected over the months, recording and processing sounds with my laptop. "tout est silencieux" takes shape in a relatively calm period for me: a period of great change, of earthquakes and jolts, having also had to adapt to new situations and circumstances certainly exciting and even complicated. The record tries to evoke all those moments of calm, emotional tranquility and relax, when we are able to really enjoy ‘em maybe for a few of hours, while taking the necessary distance from the our modern hectic life and from our possible foggy memories.

With our next release we welcome back Nicola Fornasari who is one half of La Petite Vague, a project which we’ve almost exclusively supported across Whitelabrecs and our sister label Audio Gourmet. Nicola also records solo work as Xu, with material released through labels such as Eilean, Cathedral Transmissions and most recently, Manyfeetunder.

The next album in the Xu catalog is ‘Embodying Formlessness’, which Nicola created by recording improvisations performed on his daughter Nina’s toy ukulele and then setting these into non-synchronised loops. These were made by using various pedals by experimenting with ‘blind looping’, a technique used to create unpredictable variations of a certain loop. Additional sounds were layered into the compositions by adding minibrute parts which were also fed into effects pedals and these provide an array of high and low frequencies.
The resulting sound throughout the six tracks that encompass this album is one of a tactile minimalism and the sound itself is a representation of the concept.

In the period during which Embodying Formlessness was created, Nicola was studying the Two Truths, fundamental points developed by Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna. These consist of Relative Truth, which is the conventional way in which we perceive reality and Absolute Truth, which is the theory that objects and events have no intrinsic existence and no individual identity, except in our thoughts. Both perspectives are true and neither intellectual position is the correct one. So in summary, phenomena are both real and not real; things exist, yet nothing exists.
There is a sentence in the Heart Sutra which inspired the title for this album:
Form is no other than emptiness; emptiness no other than form. Form is exactly emptiness; emptiness exactly form.

Embodying Formlessness sets out a short collection of existential pieces, crafted from the random placement of melodic source material, adorned with subtle electronics. This provides an ideal backdrop to contemplate the theme of the Two Truths, as you try to separate the difference of what is real and what is perceived.

Day Before Us is an organic-infused dark ambient project with neoclassical embellishments. Formed by Philippe Blache in 2011. A number of physical albums has been published for well noted indie labels and distributed worldwide. With a sense of melodical lyricism, the soundscapes approach airy, gloomy and poetical registers with roots in the Senschust-weltschmerz aesthetical sensibility. Cathedral-texturing drones, reverberant stormy noises meet glimmering ambient sceneries, wandering piano notes, liturgic drones and luminous singing phrases. The project has performed in front of a wide variety of audiences at several occasions. Contemporary musical canticles of "sombre beauty" for your most enduring introspective moments.
