Xhin's debut album on Stroboscopic Artefacts, 'Sword', showcases the breath of his vision. As the second full-length release on Stroboscopic Artefacts, 'Sword' stretches the remit of the label's identity ever further.
Produced and recorded in Singapore, Xhin plucks sounds from the outer edges of electronic music and fuses them together. Xhin's approach revels not only in a hybrid sound palette but it's also an album designed for multiple contexts. It’s a record typified by duality. Xhin's process seamlessly traversed analogue and digital production, and 'Sword' harbours electronic music that ranges from brutal club sounds to deep and delicate murmurs.
It's clear from the way the album is crafted and layered that Xhin is a skilled sound designer. The tracks seem to have been worked on from a 360o perspective. His muse? The void. But rather than soundtracking the abyss, 'Sword' is a strategy, an attempt to negotiate a way out. Part of the answer that he proposes abandons the shadowy recesses of melancholy in search of the ecstatic. 'The Secret Closet' depicts a dream state in frosted tones and icy ambience that is returned to again with the discordant jangles of 'Inside'. 'Wood' picks up the motive once more. At the kernel of 'Wood' is melody that Xhin composed on the piano and then digitally processed into a state of bliss.
However, 'Sword' refuses to languish in a romantic hinterland and the ambience is off set by aggressive, weighty cuts. 'Fox and Wolves' is Xhin ripping into any nostalgia that opening track 'The Secret Closet' promised. Equally 'Teeth' gnashes and writhes over a bed of deep beats. 'Vent' is fortified with metallic rasps and built from the droning aggression that characterized Xhin's early Stroboscopic Artefacts releases. Even at its darkest, its most violent, 'Swords' envisions the club as a place of refuge. Proposing a collective acknowledgement of the void, where dancing fends off its grip, and realization is paradoxically escapist.
'Sword' could not be more aptly titled. Xhin creates allusions with track titles that snatch images from a post-modern fairytale: woods, wolves, foxes, wardrobes. Xhin appropriates the fairytale hero's sword and the weapon becomes symbolic of a struggle, a tool against the void. A way out of dystopia. Journeying to the crispy cusp of experimentation and musical questioning, 'Sword' is one of those rare creations that emerge when a producer has absolute artistic freedom. The 10 tracks navigate parallels and paradoxes allowing Xhin to cut a deft mark across the album format.

 Wolf + Lambs' San Fran trio Pillowtalk join the W+L Black edits crew, serving up tastefully housed-up reworks of soul gems. First up they get the scissors out on Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's late 60s soul anthem "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing", turning it into an extended, chugging disco-soul bomb. Next up is Bobby Hebb's version of the classic "Sunny", this time with the simplest of house beats added, making this an essential for Marcy Hotel nights. Lastly the Festivals' super-slow soul smoocher "You've Got The Makings Of A Lover" gets seriously pepped-up, with BPMs pushed towards peak-time dancefloor action.

"Like many American dreamers in the 1970s, the Emerson brothers — Donnie and Joe, from tiny Fruitland, Wash. — thought they had what it took to start up a band and record an album. Unlike many however, the Emersons' father, Don Sr., was willing to plunk down $100,000 earned in the lumber industry to build his sons a home studio where they recorded their only album, Dreamin' Wild, in 1979. They had no real plan, certainly no distribution. Instead, they sat on a stockpile of the LPs save for the occasional copy that made its way out into the wild."

It's hard to believe that it's been close to ten years now that Human Eye have been churning the upchuck muck of the underground's last remaining unturned stones into a heady grind of alien bile and motor city lunacy, but it's really been that long and if you're somehow still not converted, you're probably not the adventurous type anyway. Timmy Vulgar and Johnny LZR have been honing their space punk madness from an inanimate blob of throbbing energy as evidenced on their earliest material, into the sophisticated slime that remains today, and whereas their primordial poundings left the "man-from-ape-with-synthesizer" theories thoroughly divided, their most recent material cuts through the dense complications and drives forward a cohesive, mind-splattering array of "what's next in punk," just as they have been doing since their planetary landing back in the mid 2000's. 

With their newest album, Human Eye 4: Into Unknown, the formidable Detroit decimators return with a pack of soft explosions and aural hallucinations destined to coalesce into a solid punch in the brain, cornering their sound into soaring anthemic shards of acid punk's forgotten tangents, melding bug-eyed prog squiggles with heavier-than-thou guitar fuzz, all ceremoniously glazed with Vulgar's inimitable streamlined skronk. Ink-soaked squid and jellyfish guts aside, Human Eye definitely know how to put on a show. But just as you could say that the theatrics are aimed at distracting you from their own guttural punk dimension, the other-worldly songs forged out of broken light bulb pieces and the slime from expired lunchmeat does wonders to the unaffected brain and causes tiny lesions that absorb all the filth and dementia uttered from Vulgar's tortured trachea, and reinforce the fact that Human Eye are undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of unique modern music.

"Hearing this podcast of Mike Allen's Capital Rap show instantly took me back to my early teenage years; hearing his voice and the choice of cuts he played bought the memories flooding back. Mike Allen show really was the soundtrack to my life back then. I would religiously tape his shows and i wasn't alone amongst my friends. We all did! The tapes were played and tunes discussed, getting played to death on ghetto blasters whilst friends perfected their breaking moves. This is where my passion and love for music really started to show. I couldn't break but boy I wanted to have all the tunes in my tape collection! 

Getting up to London to buy records was just out of reach but I was fortunate enough to buy some killer electro 12" from Groove in Soho. Just going up there was a pilgrimage. This was a shop I always wanted to visit and that first experience is a cherished memory. I also got my first taste of a youth fashion at that time. The whole look we wore was all part of that soundtrack: Tacchini tracksuits, Split Louis cords, Fila BJ's, Lacoste polo shirts etc. Labels came in and out of fashion but the look just suited the music perfectly."
