Description: Project-based learning is a way of teaching that encourages learners to work together to solve problems that are real to them and come from their daily lives. When Project-based learning happens in a caring and enabling S.P.E.C.I.A.L. learning environment, learners are able to work together to identify and solve problems, take risks, and make mistakes.

Many young South Africans are poorly prepared with the skills they need to succeed in a changing world. South Africa has a very high level of youth unemployment, but the good news is that it is possible to lower youth unemployment, by preparing young people with the mindset they need to succeed in either education, employment or entrepreneurship – the three E’s of E3. Let’s get started and find out how this is possible!

Introduction To PBL- Lesson One

As babies we are born able to learn and discover. When children are still very young, they learn by discovering the environment around them.

They do this naturally; they are not motivated by any external rewards. We call this intrinsic motivation. We do not have to tell them what or how to learn, they simply explore their environments. Through this process of learning, children naturally develop the qualities of an “Entrepreneurial”.

These are people with an entrepreneurial mindset who are self-motivated to find solutions – either for themselves – or mostly for others.

It is really important that the schooling process continues and supports this natural way of learning that happens before school, all throughout school so that children can grow the entrepreneurial mindsets they have before they start school.

Safe spaces are essential for discovery learning and the development of an entrepreneurial mindset. By creating and enabling  a safe learning environment the journey of learning becomes more enjoyable and learner centered.

Introduction to PBL- Lesson Three

In the last lesson we looked at what a caring environment is and why it is so important. In this lesson we will look at what it means to create an enabling learning environment.  

An ENABLING environment is a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. learning environment. It is crucial for the growth of an entrepreneurial mindset and requires a CARING environment to be effective. A S.P.E.C.I.A.L. learning environment is an environment where there are opportunities for Social Interaction, where learning has Purpose and meaning, where learners can experience Enjoyment and Curiosity, and where there is a place for  Iteration, Active engagement and Learner autonomy. The principles of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. are the principles of effective learning and should be sustained throughout the schooling process.
