Yes, it really has been fifteen years since Future Tech (aka Drumsound & Bassline Smith) signalled the beginning of the Technique Recordings odyssey with their eponymous debut collaboration. Since then, the drum and bass sound has spread its tendrils from the dark corners of the underground into the limelight of mainstream appreciation. And Technique has been at the forefront of that evolution all the way. So, here's an LP to show the world exactly what a decade and a half among the top tier of D&B labels sounds like.

Label heads Drumsound & Bassline Smith take pole position, dropping straight into the drama of the Friction-supported “Spring Heel Jack”. Then comes another of Technique's most recognisable acts, Tantrum Desire with the low-down funk of “Shuffle”, followed by another Friction-favourite from the bossmen with “Sputnik”. The big names keep coming throughout the album, as Crissy Criss supplies the VIP of his monumental “Create the Future” and the mighty Digital goes dubbed-out with a remix of “Phantasm”. Plus Drumsound & Bassline Smith's alter-ego 2DB pass through with the highly-grimey “Terrahawk” and L Plus delivers two precision-engineered killers in the form of “Red Planet” and “Going Down”.

Flipping the script, Technique new boys Document One strike from two angles with the laid-back “Jazz Club” and the dirty dancefloor uppercut of “Body Like Wow”. TREi takes us to the big room with “Here & Now”, and the ever-individual MaxNRG shows off his ability to combine energy with melody on “Far Frontiers of Space”. Erb N Dub and Skope recruit Mr Dirty Smirks, MC SMK himself, to bring some typically hard bars to “Pull it Back”. Kronology does what it says on the tin with some “Razor Sharp” technoid-jungle vibes. And Aussie badman Spectrem brings some hands-in-the-air euphoria with “Say Goodbye” and then roughen things up with “The Future”. Infrasonik take the honour of completing the collection with “Bricks Breaking”. L Plus – Everyone / The Lost Moon

Technique's Slovakian assassin is back. Fresh from dusting off a couple of classic cuts for the TECH 100 Retrospective LP, L Plus has managed to find the time in his ever-burgeoning international DJing schedule to supply something brand new.

“Everyone” goes percussive straight from the off with layers of monotonic synths to get your head nodding. The intensity builds until some unmistakeably L Plus-flavoured punchy drums and sweeping bass tones signal it's time for the dancefloor to get moving. This is the sound of primitive tribalistic rhythmic interplay built from anything-but-primitive sound design. When DJs want to mix into a sure-fire party bubbler, here's one to have ready at the other end of the crossfader.

Then “The Lost Moon” goes a touch more atmospheric. Intergalactic brass stabs are underpinned by a classic “Houston we have a problem” sample and rising warning tones to leave you in no doubt that the situation's about to get critical. And critical is exactly what it gets with a complex call-and-response drop punctuated by sudden vibe-twisting fills. This track draws you in and fires the dancefloor off on a journey through hostile alien territory with no escape pod.

As usual with L Plus, there's more than just a couple of expertly crafted party-wrecking DJ tools here. There's also some serious production skills and musicality on show, making this release perfectly suited for the radio as well as the rave.

There might only be a few releases under the Kronology
moniker, but the experience of the producers
formerly known as Slogun and iOh has shone through
nonetheless. Now, the LA-based duo are regular fixtures
on the set-lists of some of the biggest DJs in the scene.
Take Friction on Radio 1, for example. He’s supported
them since they first hit Technique and recently
premiered this very release. If you heard that (and if you didn’t, you’d better have a good
excuse) you’ll already know they’ve shoved the bar up another couple of notches. Mantra opens up into a world of atmospheric pads while a strident techy kick and reverberant rim-shots mark out the beat. It’s a hypnotic vibe which draws us in further as percussive tones augment the arrangement. As distorted edges of bass start to appear, though, it’s clear the trance-like meditative state is about to be shattered.
The tune drops like a martial arts move. Kronology capture the energy from the ethereal pads and turn it back on itself in the form of bass, using its force to punch through the calmness. The flow of the intro is converted into driving power. Call and response patterns switching between basslines, backed with break-laced drums, bring irresistible movement for the dancefloor.
It’s no surprise that Kronology are building a loyal fanbase among ravers and DJs alike. They consistently deliver heavyweight dancefloor killers with twists and turns that diverge from any known formula. And here’s another one that’s bound for raves and airwaves worldwide.

The biggest drum 'n' bass event on Earth, bringing together tens of thousands of ravers and hundreds of artists over three days and nights, is Let it Roll. As if that wasn't insane enough, this August, the award winning Czech festival will be graced with a Technique Recordings Label Night. And, there's brand new music to mark the occasion properly.

Opening proceedings is a VIP relick of a tune from Drumsound & Bassline Smith's massive 2017 album “Wardance”. This version of “Control” ramps up the energy from the first bar, with insistently percussive synths leading the way. Then the pulsing, stomping drop, driven by a bassline with an extra layer of grit, is sculpted for maximum rave destruction. Explosive.

“Vybez” delivers us into a trademark Tantrum Desire cinematic opening. Expansive pads stretch into the distance as subtle hints of drum edge towards us over the horizon. There's no way you're going to see the dark, scything drop coming, with a screwface bassline that screams out for a reload. This is going to cut through sub-genre divisions and take heads off at the biggest festivals and grottiest raves alike.

Then Technique's latest recruits, No Concept, take to the stage. They've already proven capable of creating multiple styles, and with “Make Noize” they've built a monster. The long tension-ramping build supported by that “make some noise” sample writes a very big cheque, but the drop is more than capable of cashing it. The warping and twisting bassline, those gut-punch drums, and the adrenaline-shot fills combine into an absolute beast of a tune.

Finally L Plus gives us “Let Roll the World”. Gigantic uplifting arpeggios set the tone in the intro. The “let it roll” dialogue clip adds an extra boost of hype. And then there's an almighty drop which rattles off a full polyrhythmic ammo belt. A syncopated pattern in the bass weaves in and out of switching percussion instruments while a rock-solid kick and snare provide the scaffolding that holds it all together. Powerful stuff.

Even in this four-track mini-compilation, the strength and depth of production skill on show makes it very clear why Technique is such a revered label. And it also demonstrates exactly why their Label Night at Let it Roll in August is going to be unmissable.

More Than You (Friction Rmx of the Week BBC Radio1) - Koven

Drum & Bass duo DC Breaks have made their way onto the widest range of playlists. Their hardcore club cuts have been rewound by the likes of DJ Friction and Andy C. On the other hand, the songwriting ability displayed on the single ‘Faithless’, featuring Bianca, has plastered them all over the radio. That’s just the tip of a very large iceberg. DC Breaks have earned their stripes in the underground but, with an album due in the Autumn and a packed festival season ahead, they’re about to explode onto the international stage in a spectacular fashion.

Since signing to Andy C’s Ram Records they’ve carved a reputation for delivering world class remixes for some of the biggest names in pop. Their work on singles by Paloma Faith, Lady Gaga, Lana del Rey, Tinie Tempah and others, and production for Example (a cut on the ‘Playing in the Shadows’ album) woke the pair up to the possibilities offered by vocalists. It was the start of the journey that led to the forthcoming album, packed with crossover cuts such as the piano-led ‘Breathe’ featuring Dave Gibson, with its contagious, urgent chorus. Or the soulful explosion of ‘No One Like You’ sung with passion by Niara Scarlett. Or the epic blast of ‘Salvation’ wherein DC Breaks take heavy duty bass sounds and tie them to uplifting, irresistible vocal hooks.

Once they graduated to Ram itself, with monster cuts such as ‘Shaman’ and last year’s battering ‘Lock-In’, they hit the drum & bass A-league. Before long it wasn’t just the drum & bass scene paying attention. DC Breaks tunes made it onto BBC Radio via Zane Lowe, Mistajam and Annie Mac.

“Chase and Status opened the door to drum & bass being accepted in the mainstream,” says Dan, “and through that door went DJ Fresh, Wilkinson, and now us.”

It certainly looks that way with appearances at multiple 2015 festivals, including UKF, NASS, SW4 and Glastonbury.

“I love the wildness of festivals,” says Dan, “Like we played on Arcadia’s outdoor stage last New Year’s Eve, in this big tower with fire blasting out of it. I was literally three or four feet directly underneath the flame-thrower in a really small box. If something goes wrong we were literally toast!”

If DC Breaks can avoid being fried by flame-throwers, the summer will be theirs. By the end of 2015, with their debut album blowing up everywhere, the year might well be too.
