Four Four Premiere: Pagan - Mirage [FREE DL]

One of my biggest inspirations from the last few years has been the New York artist Jean-Michel Basquait/Samo. The track name comes from a painting of his, on which he wrote the words "Most (Y̶o̶u̶n̶g̶) Kings Get Their Heads Cut Off”.  

The track builds for the first two thirds with some harsh breaks accompanied by a deep bassline and some flowing acid. Then towards the end, the atmosphere changes significantly with a massive kick taking the place of the breaks.

With a variety of Breakbeat, Progressive Breaks and Electro Breaks, “Breaks For Days Vol.1” is the perfect toolkit for a DJ who wants to add some syncopated flavour to their sets.

‘Sharpson’ On starting Choki Biki Records
I suppose it’s the usual story. Over the past two years, I was getting sent a lot of really good promos from producers. I felt like the majority of them deserved a good release. I had just finished doing a music business course and I thought; “Well I guess I’m starting a label”. The name ‘Choki Biki’ comes from the idea that I’m always in the mood for a chocolate biscuit. It’s my ‘go too’ snack of choice. We want that same mentality with a Choki Biki release, that it’s a DJs default go to when they’re spinning. Like a fat kid to a cookie jar.

At first I didn’t know what direction I wanted to take it. I was making a lot of Tech-House at the time, but my heart is with Drum & Bass and Rave sounds. I had a chat with two artists, Stephen Kenny and Tito Long, who I’d met on the Four Four forum. They got me thinking that rather than getting bogged down into one genre, we should just do a number of series branching out into house, techno, acid, breaks, electro, whatever! That way we can have our cake (or biscuit) and eat it too. It’s funny because we all have very diverse tastes when it comes to our dance music, but we always want a label to just release one style of music. It might be bad for business, but we’re trying to break out of that mentality and I hope people get to grips with what we’re doing. 

The ‘Breaks For Days Vol. 1’ compilation is basically a wet dream for a DJ who wants to get more ‘amens’ in their sets. When I put out the word that I was looking for tunes for the compilation, it was looking like the EP was going to be ‘Bicep - Glue: The Musical’ as everyone was sending in demos that were clearly influenced by that iconic track. 

When compiling it, I just wanted an LP that would suit a variety of different situations I find myself in when I’m DJing. If I’m at 140 bpm playing techno, I can just flip on the A side to ‘break’ (pun intended) up the set a bit. If I’m ending the night and want to push up the tempo, I can throw on the B-Side. I’m really happy with how it all came together. Between the producer’s tracks, artwork by Aaron Jones, and the Lobster Theremin team helping with distribution, it’s been smooth sailing so far. I just hope people enjoy the EP as much as I do.

The first track of the B side is an Electro Breaks banger titled ‘Unknown Entity’ from High Fidelity aka Rob Stapleton. This is the first track of the EP that delves into the darker sounds of break music. This 144bpm track would definitely fit into a heavy techno set. The hard hitting electro beat and intense synths evokes imagery of an early 90’s Berlin club. High Fidelity has definitely supplied ‘Breaks For Days Vol.1’ with the ‘dark side’ of break music.
