ABOUT: 

DDay One was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He has a double major in hip-hop as a turntablist and samplist. He also has a minor in graffiti art (as do most b-boys), noticeable by his signature. His obsession with manipulating vinyl records started in the early 1990′s, when at the age of 11 he began exploring the depths of Los Angeles’ thrift shops and record stores. 


Without a sampler at the time, his first compositions were made by engaging in sessions of “dropping the needle” (placing the needle repeatedly in the same spot of a record to emulate the repetition of a break in a song) and repeatedly looping the desired sample segments on a tape deck. After using this method of creating beats and amassing stacks of records from years of beat mining, he furthered his manipulation of vinyl and love of music by utilizing the sequencing capabilities of a sampler.

Gin & Tonic

A remix of sorts of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Peter Gabriel's track Passion from the soundtrack of Martin Scorcese's film The Last Temptation of Christ. I did this for a TeeJays fashion show in Lahore which had a political theme to it, which is why the Charlie Chaplin speech from The Great Dictator is thrown in. Feeha Jamshed and I worked on it together, and the idea was hers.

It doesn't sound too bad, actually. Made the whole thing on Garageband, the first time I used it because I used to be a snob. But DAMN it's easy to play with! Some basic tools are missing which is annoying, though.

This project of early-works was originally circulated as a cassette, limited to 20 copies.
Recently, it was restored using modern audio restoration and preservation techniques.
This process involved digitizing material from 4-track, 3.5” floppy disc and one of the surviving tapes.

The title “Mood Algorithms” reflects the compositional process in which beats were created with inspiration from daily moods. The cover art, created by British designer Oliver Cartwright (<a href="http://www.olivercartwright.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.olivercartwright.com</a>), illustrates the sequence of these moods which are represented by the array of vivid colors.
