  Josh had the idea for doing a traditional Palestinian song, as he is an avid fan of their music. He wanted to raise awareness of this music and everyone in the band was immediately on board with this idea, and set about to make it happen. 
  Mark, who is an expert percussionist, learned a basic traditional Palestinian drum pattern, in a very authentic fashion. He laid it down, along with an Arabic sounding modal melody line portrayed by the quanun, which is a kind of zither. Josh found this pattern fascinating, and added his five string fretless bass to the it shortly after. Carl jumped in very shortly thereafter, and came up with some really amazing vocal melodies, as well as wonderfully prescient lyrics. He even learned more than several phrases in Arabic, which he sang in there, too. We were all very impressed by this, of course.
  JJ was next up, adding his magical, melodic, and exotic saz, shakuhachi, and synth to the mix. Ken threw in next, adding his perfectly timed brass and Chinese percussion to the mix, too. Last, but certainly not least, Stephen recorded his subtle, exotic, traditional sitar to the piece. 
  Once we had it all recorded, we turned it over to Mark for a mix, as the whole thing is really his baby. Stephen mastered it, though, as he is our resident professional producer.
  Our hope is that this song inspires you to dig into Palestinian music, and through that, you recognize the magic and the humanity of millions of Palestinian people who are suffering unimaginably right now. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Music is our key to permanant peace on planet Earth in my view. If written thoughfully, it is our unimposing tool where we can share our different cultures like EC have done here to celebrate with our Palestinian friends stylistically the light of their music. I don't speak Arabic so I hope I don't offend anyone but I learned the Arabic as best as I could phonetically. It's done with the best of intentions . The eight Arabic lines are famous proverbs and show us how similarly all of our truths evolve from our hearts and souls

Oh My Darlin' Palestine (Eclectic Collective)

I have always enjoyed being a Dad but things do change so incredibly fast.  One moment you’re getting them ready for school and in seemingly double-quick time, they’re all grown up, with all of the problems the transition into adulthood inevitably entails.  They acquire ‘significant others’, some of whom you like and some you’re pretty sure are never going to make the cut.  From a distance, you look on with increasing interest, watching them struggle with the intricacies of romantic involvement.
This song involves the machinations of my youngest son’s relationship with one particular girlfriend, who seemed to have an issue with any form of commitment.  Sometimes she’d show up out of the blue, wanting to spend every moment with him, then disappear into the ether and not contact him for days.
He and I had quite a few Father to Son conversations about her, primarily because we were both concerned about her mental wellbeing.  He’d try to contact her to check if everything was alright, often without success.  Then, without warning, she’d be back on the scene, the whole merry-go-round starting all over again.  I did my level best to help but she truly was an enigma and I was never really sure if what I had to say was helping the situation.  As with many such tricky equations in life, no obvious solution came to light and things slowly ground to a halt.  To this day, though, he says she was one of the most confusing people he ever met.
As is my habit, I decided to write a song about her, calling it ‘Take’ because it was an anagram of her name (by all means have a guess…), hoping to delineate the complexities of the things she both said and did.  Gal really loved the song and going through a marriage break-up as he was at the time, asked if he could contribute a few lines to the lyrics as a way of describing the bewilderment he was feeling, which proved an interesting window into his thinking.
Our brilliant engineer Nick thought slowing it down would give it a kind of Massive Attack feel, an approach that suited it to a tee.  But we needed something else, something magical in the mix, so Gal suggested asking our good friend Steph Laporte (‘DDJohn’ to his SC friends) to record a lead break along with some additional, extra-slurpy licks on his clarinet.  Steph is a wonderful player and as I’m sure you’ll agree, his contribution proved exactly what was needed.  It’s a real favourite of mine - so different from anything we’ve done before.  By the way, anyone worked out that anagram yet?  (Terry Reeves)

I sent him a copy of the penultimate mix and he was good enough to return a detailed list of possible adjustments, all of which were entirely spot-on and made the job of getting the final mix completed in the allotted hour very achievable, something in some doubt but for his assistance.
