Cliodhnas Wave

Cliodhna was an ancient Irish goddess of love and lust for whom a great drowning wave was named. She commanded the winds of all four corners. The south wind was her voice and she used it to sing of magic and desires. The west wind was her vehicle, and upon it she rode through the universe. The warm eastern wind was her nourishment, and the cold northern wind her weapon. At her service were 3 special birds that sang beautiful and magical songs that healed the sick. Cliodhna fell in love with a mortal man named Ciabhan, for whom she left the Land of Promise, (Tir Tairngire). She took to living in the rocks near the sea, where she was lulled to sleep due to the music played by a minstrel of Manannan mac Lir in Glandore harbour in County Cork, and swallowed into the icy depths of the sea by the wave that was to bear her name. Whether she drowns or not depends on the version being told, along with many other details of the story.
