Well it's been more than 365 days and nights since we released a record on our small and independent record label based in Vancouver, BC. For better or worse we have always operated at a pace that feels natural to us. The same could be said for Mood Hut recording artist Jack J who has not released any music in over seven years. Do you remember his last record? It was called Thirstin' and it came out in the summer of 2015, hot on the heels of Something (On My Mind) which came out the year before. 

So naturally after this very long silence we are proud and excited to be able to finally share Opening the Door, the first full length LP by Jack J. 

Self-recorded slowly but surely between 2015 and 2019 between Mood Hut and C'est Life Studios, and featuring some crucial saxophone work by Linda Fox, this LP confirms Jack J to be a masterful mood setter as well as an incisive songwriter. Over the course of the album an undeniably blue haze settles over inward-peering ambient jazz, On-U-inspired digital-dub and quiet storm soft rock leaving a distinct sense of sadness amongst all the tangerine funk.

Session Victim’s 5th studio album ‘low key, low pressure’ feels like an anathema to today’s fast paced, industry driven musical landscape – and for all the right reasons!

Having released two intense, dancefloor-focused 12“s on Rhythm Section and Delusions of Grandeur over the past year, their return to Night Time Stories brings out their trippy, headsy side once again. And despite the pandemic downtime being over, Hauke & Matthias remain holed up in the studio, jamming, head nodding to drum breaks, and churning out records like the one in front of you.

The tracks on ‘low key, low pressure’ feel effortless, but they can only have been created by musicians who are masters of their craft – even though they both swear “the music was just playing us, we just pressed the record”. Fifteen years after releasing their debut, Session Victim are taking stock on ‘low key, low pressure’, their new long player that is hosted on Night Time Stories, and up for release this week. This is their fifth studio album and is, in many ways, an homage to their career. It is most certainly a record that will tell you what the German duo are all about.

Inspired by their passion for touching all corners of the electronic world, the collection showcases ten carefully crafted productions produced in the intensity of their tight Berlin production bubble. Containing an undoubted sense of nostalgia, ‘low key, low pressure’ works for ultra late Saturday nights, just as it would play out beautifully as the sun comes up on sleepy Sunday mornings. It’s synth effects and drum chops are cut with hip-hop breakbeats and hazy melodies to engage you, while songs like ‘Walk In The Park’ leave space for thought and reflection, track ‘Mycelium Dub’ and it’s foggy, meditative vibe will both hypnotise and mesmerise. Here Session Victim demonstrate their talent for melding musical worlds on this ten track missive, providing us with a timely reminder that the German underground duo are going nowhere and have plenty to offer.

It’s with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that Tom and I present
you with the 200th Freerange release. Despite the best efforts of three bankrupt
distributors, an arsonist (who set the Sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a
volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most
importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here
we are at Freerange 200!
To mark the occasion we wanted to put together a compilation of exclusive new
tracks from both long-standing Freerange regulars as well as some fresh artists
to the label whose music we’ve been loving.  Being committed to vinyl we figured
the best way would be to do a two part release with four-tracks on each part.

Turning to Part B we open with a brilliant track with almost as good a title;
Hamburglar from Luv Jam.  This guy has been responsible for killer cuts on
esteemed labels such as We Play House, Tsuba and Phonica White so we wanted in on
the action and thankfully he indulged us.  We absolutely love the raw simplicity
of this track which bumps along just perfectly with not much more than a kick,
clap and single note bass line to keep you grooving. Apart from the repeating
piano stab hooking you in and sending people nuts when everything drops out in
the break that is.
Esa & Mervin Granger come next with the sublime deepness of Goema Heat.  Esa’s
proudly wearing his Cape Town roots on his sleeves on this one and as the title
suggests, has come up with the perfect track to warm up any party worth it’s
salts. We’re talking heavy on the percussion and tantalizing synth FX and a
lovely tension which builds subtly before taking things up a gear after the
breakdown when the bouncing bassline comes to the fore.
It’s fare to say a Freerange release such as this wouldn’t be complete without a
Manuel Tur contribution, so while we’ve been busy putting together his
forthcoming Remix Retrospective LP we’re happy to say Manuel found the time to
put together this gem entitled Laguenesie.
And last but not least we have Kito Jempere with his track This Is Why We Do This
featuring Detroit luminary Jerry The Cat.  St. Petersburg native Kito drops
serious heat on this raw and dubby club jam which we feel is probably as close to
an ‘archetypal’ Freerange track as it’s possible to get so sums up this special
release perfectly.
