ANTICHRIST--FRESCO (2021)
This work was commissioned by Arash Yazdani and his Ensemble for New Music Talinn with funds provided by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation.It is an evocation in sound of the famous film by Lars von Trier, ANTICHRIST. Like the film that inspired it, ANTICHRIST--FRESCO follows the same form as described by Lars von Trier in the film's scenario: Opening (Prélude), Grief, Pain, Despair, The Three Beggars, and Closing (Postlude). This short musical work may be considered as a kind of prélude for the operatic adaptation of the film, based on Lars von Trier's film, that is being composed presently. In ANTICHRIST--FRESCO, the harmonium in 6ths of tone, designed by the composer, Alois Hàba, is a kind of sonic protagonist (played by Miroslav Beinhauer) who is accompanied by an ensemble of 8 instruments. The harmonium player and all 8 instrumentalists function as a kind of Greek chorus expressing the powerful emotions that the horrific human tragedy of ANTICHRIST evoke. Unlike the opera ANTICHRIST, ANTICHRIST--FRESCO relies on a combination of  instrumental and non-verbal sounds and phonemes, rather than words, to evoke the intense drama of Lars von Trier's scenario.

An error is not just a mistake, it has a consequence. But an error is also not a crime, not a sin, don’t take it personal. The error-notification-like sounds are all from the Buchla 200 synthesizer. They remind us the moment of feeling regretful of the errors but not being allowed to have this feeling.

Improvising on my tenor sax, processed by Efx Fragments using the preset “Alternate Scan“ from VAST, processing the 2 Macros in LogicX. Some extra reverb (B2) was added on the dry sax signal and on the Fragments signal.

This piece is part of a series of several solo instrumental pieces from the 1980s called RSRCH. In these pieces the Canadian composer and recorder player Peter Hannan focused on one specific aspect of new instrumental playing techniques. RSRCH 12/84 is written for a tenor recorder and completely dedicated to multiphonics, exploring their quality, strength, and fragility. In the beginning of the piece the multiphonics are introduced carefully. The main part plays with rapid virtuosic changes, from natural sounds to multiphonics and back again. This creates a polyphony on a monophonic instrument in such a fascinating way that it puts both audience and performer into a kind of trance. Thus, also the subtitle Dream.
