Throwing back to Sat morning at the Place of Dreams on the edge of the Karoo desert, March 2021, where I was tasked with easing everyone into the day at the campsite. I originally played 2.5h, but only had the last hour recorded. However I wanted to share the full set so I re-recorded it from the playlist this weekend, added in a few newly released tunes and this was the result! It's not often I get the opportunity to play this slow and I got a bit carried away with the new recording and it ended up being 4h30. Here's an opening set I played at the poolside stage for a friend's birthday in December last year, 12-2pm. Things start off easy, ramp up quickly, then chill out again a bit in the middle - I realised it was only 1pm 🙃🤣 - and then pick up again for the last bit. This is just the third time we've played together, the first being at Bloom Festival (JHB) where he joined me for the last half of an impromptu set the Friday night and things just clicked - we knew we had to do this more often!

Here's  recording of my set from beautiful seed stage from overwhelming modem festival. I started the stage at 8.00 in the morning with first sun rays of festival after really cold dawn beside river and small crowd of beautiful people  and friends enjoyed it, especialy me.

Having been attending Origin Festival for over a decade, this was a dream booking come true! South Africa's premier psychedelic festival and I had the honour of kicking the Beats Floor off on Saturday morning. It was an early start just after 8am, so I selected tracks to ease everyone into their day: whether they were grooving on the floor, lounging next to the river a couple meters away having their morning swim or chilling in their campsites just over the river, this selection was bound to get them ready for the madness of the day that lay ahead.

The mix features a ton of new releases as well as some throwback classics (both tracks that make regular appearances in my sets and a couple I haven't played for a while). I hope you enjoy listening back to this as much as I had putting it together and playing it. And big thanks for all the love from the dancefloor and those that made it out - was so epic seeing you all moving and having fun out there!

Origin Festival ~ Beats Floor | Opening [27 Jan 2024] <downtempo> {2.5h}

Here’s my recording from my set the Sunday at Root Festival ~ Depth of Dreams two weeks ago! I was given the opportunity to curate the program for the Sunday and used this to book my dream Sunday progression. Kicking things off with some slow downtempo, through midtempo and finally this set for some PsyTech into daytime dark proggy/Zenon! I’ve been waiting patiently to play these tunes for a very long time, so this set turned into a little bit of a throwback/retro set 🤩

Driven by a passion for discovering music; deacon has built a formidable collection spanning from downtempo through psychedelic techno to a deep progressive all containing a homogeneous groovy energy and impeccable sound design. Currently signed to @techgnosisrecords, he carefully selects tracks to create an eccentric narrative tailored to each event and lineup with one purpose: to introduce new sounds that bridge division and bring connection through sound and movement.

Full bio:
Driven foremost by a passion for discovering new music; Matthew Deacon has built a treasure chest of audible gold and has been sharing these gems with dancefloors for over a decade now.

A varying palate for sound led to the discovery of psychedelic techno in 2017 and prompted a rebrand under his namesake with a more focused sound. Hooked by the layers, depth, vast variety of sounds and intrinsic musical nature the genre presented led to the emergence of the soundscape we know as Deacon.

As time progressed he started discovering more music, artists and labels representing these similar characteristics; at a higher tempo there was deep/dark progressive, a lighter side of Zenonesque, and slowing things down with a reinterpretation of downtempo, akin to pitched down techno. And whilst these can be considered three distinct genres, they all hold a similar energy; with deep basslines, organic elements and impeccable production, and Deacon enjoys navigating between them. Carefully selecting tracks to create an eccentric narrative tailored to the event and lineup with one purpose: to bridge division and bring connection through sound and movement.
