Here's my closing set from a birthday weekend in the Karoo in March 2021 at the Place of Dreams. The mix starts off with deep and dark progressive or daytime Zenonesque and flows into a psy tech conclusion.

SFE Birthday | Canyon Sunday Closing [March 2021] <prog/zenon|psytech> {1.5h}

Here's the second set I played at a friends birthday last year - from 8-1015pm. This was a crossover set where I was taking over from a melodic/techy act and transitioning to psytrance/prog. 

Unfortunately the last 30min of the set didn't record, so I had to re-record the end... I could've done it exactly the same, but I've got so many great new tunes since this set I couldn't record something without adding them in (these additions are marked with a * in the tracklist).

Hedonesia | Sat Crossover [Sep 2020] <psytech|prog/zenon> {2.5h}

If I were to classify the music I currently play I'd say there are three "distinct" styles: downtempo, psytech and prog/zenonesque; were I highly enjoying doing crossover sets between them. I've always wanted to try do all three in a single set and last year November I got the opportunity to do so at the The Psygasm Experience (@psygasmic) x EARS DON'T LIE's EarGasm. Usually I'd want at least an hour or more for each style to transition smoothly, but here I had 90minutes to cross from a classical downtempo act, Clear Particles (aka @killawatt) at 100bpm to a full-on psytrance act, @havokkhailstone at 140bpm. Was a little challenging, especially covering 10bpm of psytech in 30min, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing this set and am pretty stoked with how things turned out. This tracklist is pretty much a summary of most of my favourite producers 🤩Hope you enjoy 💃

Better late than never - here's my recording for the October Habitat last year! This was a closing psytech (with a little dark prog at the end) set 3-5am after @lewis-music-sa. Having opened for him earlier in the year at Echo (https://soundcloud.com/deacon_za/echo-valley-of-dreams-sat-night-26-march-2022) it was nice to flip things around and it allowed me to dive into the darker side of my collection. Taking over from his high energy sound was a fun challenge. It was also one of the biggest (and best crowds) I've played to - which all resulted in probably my favourite psychedelic techno progression thus far. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Habitat ~ Among Mountains | Closing [1 Oct 2022] <psytech|zenon/prog> {2h}

Here's my recording from the last Habitat where I kicked things off on the Sunday morning. This set started at 9am, but I played some downtempo an hour before during a yoga flow leading into this (set to be posted soon). This set is a progression from downtempo, through psychedelic techno and closing off with some dark prog/zenonesque (103-136bpm) - a journey of waking the festival up and getting everyone in the groove for the prog/psy-trance that was to follow for the rest of the day! This is the second time doing such a wide bpm range set and damn it was fun - a little rocky at times as I was extremely sick leading up to the set so didn't plan it much, but once again I'm super happy with how it turned out. A set all about that Sumiruna/Axon, Ambler, Smilk, Adama - deep bush proggy sound and features a bunch of new tracks, but I also dug out some old favourites that deserve to still get played! Habitat ~ Volcanic Sky | Sun Opening [7 May 2023] <downtempo|psytech|zenon> {1.5h}

It's been a moment since I've uploaded a new Psychedelic Techno mix... and so I present to you the recording of my set from @hidden-beat-ct's event at ColorBox Studios last month. This was an afternoon set, 2nd of the day. I took over from some quality downtempo and so decided to start a little lower than planned to bridge the gap and transition from the downtempo to the dark prog act playing after me (@warren-bami-barnard). The rest of the line up also included the master @evil_oil_man as well as @nordictbk and @mcguire89. All in all a mega day packed full of psychedelic goodness!

Closing set, after @deadbeatfm, for Logikal Progression. This set begins off with Psychedelic Techno and builds up to Progressive Trance and the lighter side of Zenonesque. Was supposed to be a 2hour set, but ended up playing on for an extra hour. 125-140bpm.

InDasWeTrust on 5FM | 8 June 2019 < psytech >

Here's the recording from my closing set at beats&such festival this past weekend. The set was taking over from a techhouse act and so the mix eases into psytech, peaks on the more techno side and closes off with the beautiful new remix of one of my all time favourite tracks @smilkmusic's Secret Friend by the incredibly talented @axonmusica. The crowd then asked for an encore and I obliged, but I edited out the silence and left the encore in.

Psytech Minimix [April 2019] < psytech >

Driven by a passion for discovering music; deacon has built a formidable collection spanning from downtempo through psychedelic techno to a deep progressive all containing a homogeneous groovy energy and impeccable sound design. Currently signed to @techgnosisrecords, he carefully selects tracks to create an eccentric narrative tailored to each event and lineup with one purpose: to introduce new sounds that bridge division and bring connection through sound and movement.

Full bio:
Driven foremost by a passion for discovering new music; Matthew Deacon has built a treasure chest of audible gold and has been sharing these gems with dancefloors for over a decade now.

A varying palate for sound led to the discovery of psychedelic techno in 2017 and prompted a rebrand under his namesake with a more focused sound. Hooked by the layers, depth, vast variety of sounds and intrinsic musical nature the genre presented led to the emergence of the soundscape we know as Deacon.

As time progressed he started discovering more music, artists and labels representing these similar characteristics; at a higher tempo there was deep/dark progressive, a lighter side of Zenonesque, and slowing things down with a reinterpretation of downtempo, akin to pitched down techno. And whilst these can be considered three distinct genres, they all hold a similar energy; with deep basslines, organic elements and impeccable production, and Deacon enjoys navigating between them. Carefully selecting tracks to create an eccentric narrative tailored to the event and lineup with one purpose: to bridge division and bring connection through sound and movement.
