+++Berlin Jazz Trio Heinze/ Richter / Rohmer introduces their album „War Ballet“+++

A martial title for an album with a romantic tone: „War Ballet“ is the first joint venture of the Berlin jazz trio Heinze / Richter / Rohmer. The three artists understand their music as a response to the skillful presentation of wars and crises in the media. "I find it surprising, how much the reporting on crises follows certain aesthetics," says Gregor Heinze (piano): "No matter what war, no matter what tragedy - the media images are all confusingly similar." He experiences politics emotionally himself, underlines the 31 -year-old: "My way of addressing it is to make music.”

And so it is no coincidence the trio has chosen improvisation, probably the most personal form of expression in jazz: “We wanted to give the greatest possible freedom to the emotionalpower”, says Heinze. "Nevertheless, there are ‘islands' within the individual pieces. To get some rest – and also for us to not lose our minds.” Laurids Richter (drums) adds: “Hardly any idiom is more suitable than the jazz idiom for recording and replaying time flows.” And Philipp Rohmer (bass) likewise sees “War Ballet” as a highly personal and, at the same time, highly political project.

Berlin photographer Andreas Mühe, who is regularly picking up on contemporary historical and political issues in his own work, confirms their success with this objective. “This extraordinary trio succeeds in freeing the existential moment of jazz from any exhibited ‘artistry’ and dares to engage in the adventure of the indefinite time and again,
without ever leaving an impression of arbitrariness”, says Mühe, who has been friends with Gregor Heinze and Laurids Richter for years.

To Laurids Richter, this “adventure of the indefinite” is a “flight with an open outcome”: “We want the risk, we want to make music that is not predictable. In doing so, we are completely dependent on each other – that’s the beauty of it”, the 31-year-old explains. He and Heinze go back a long way: as early as in pre-school they were playing music together in their Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood. Between the age of 20 and 30 their ways parted, each was looking for his own musical path, until they reunited on “War Ballet”. “Musically, we have definitely benefitted from this period of separation”, Richter says.

A diverse range of artists has influenced Heinze / Richter / Rohmer: Tom Waits, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Kenny Wheeler, but also Hip Hop and songwriters like Hermann van Veen and Gerhard Schöne – “for the cheesy side of me“, as Heinze emphasizes.

Martialischer Titel für ein Album mit romantischem Grundton: „War Ballet“ heißt das erste Gemeinschaftswerk des Jazztrios Heinze / Richter / Rohmer. Die drei Berliner Künstler verstehen ihre Musik auch als Antwort auf die kunstfertige Präsentation von Kriegen und Krisen in den Medien. „Ich finde es erstaunlich, wie sehr die Krisenberichterstattung einer bestimmten Ästhetik folgt“, sagt Gregor Heinze (Klavier): „Egal welcher Krieg, egal welche Tragödie: Die Medienbilder sind einander zum Verwechseln ähnlich.“ Er selbst erlebe Politik emotional, betont der 31-Jährige: „Meine Art der Auseinandersetzung damit ist es, Musik zu machen.“
 
Und so ist es auch kein Zufall, dass das Trio für dieses Thema die wohl persönlichste Ausdrucksform des Jazz gewählt hat: die Improvisation: „Damit wollen wir der emotionalen Macht die größtmögliche Freiheit geben“, sagt Heinze. „Trotzdem gibt es aber ‚Inseln’ innerhalb der einzelnen Stücke. Zum Ausruhen - und auch, damit wir nicht den Verstand verlieren.“ Laurids Richter (Drums) ergänzt: „Kaum ein Idiom eignet sich besser als das Jazzidiom, um die Zeitläufte aufzunehmen und wiederzugeben.“ Und auch Philipp Rohmer (Bass)  sieht „War Ballet“ als „zugleich höchst persönliches wie höchst politisches Projekt“.
 
Dass das Vorhaben gelungen ist, bescheinigt den drei Musikern der Berliner Fotograf Andreas Mühe, dessen Werk ebenfalls immer wieder  zeitgeschichtliche und politische Fragen thematisiert.  „Diesem außergewöhnlichen Berliner Jazztrio gelingt es, das existenzielle Moment des Jazz von jeglicher ausgestellter ‚Kunstfertigkeit‘ zu befreien und das Wagnis des Unbestimmten immer wieder neu einzugehen, ohne dabei auch nur einen Augenblick den Anschein von Beliebigkeit zu erwecken“, sagt Mühe, den eine langjärige Freundschaft mit Gregor Heinze und Laurids Richter verbindet.
 
Für Laurids Richter ist dieses „Wagnis des Unbestimmten“ ein „Flug mit offenem Ausgang“: „Wir wollen was risikieren, wir wollen Musik machen, die nicht vorhersehbar ist. Dabei sind wir vollkommen aufeinander angewiesen - das ist das Schöne“, sagte der 31-Jährige, der mit Heinze von frühester Kindheit an verbunden ist: Als Nachbarskinder im Berliner Bötzowviertel/ Prenzlauer Berg machten die beiden schon im Vorschulalter zusammen Musik. Zwischen 20 und 30 trennten sich die Wege, jeder fand für sich neue Wege in der Musik  – und diese führten sie bei „War Ballet“ wieder zusammen. „Das hat uns musikalisch nur gut getan“, sagt Richter.
 
Beeinflusst sehen sich Heinze / Richter / Rohmer von den unterschiedlichsten Strömungen: Tom Waits, HipHop, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Kenny Wheeler, aber auch Liedermacher wie Hermann van Veen und Gerhard Schöne – für „meine kitschige Seite“, wie Heinze betont.
