mixes vol.2 - this is where it's going (@ Le Sample)

The phrase “collective dreaming” floated into my mind as I began to fall asleep one night, and I jotted it down before slipping into the arms of Morpheus. I later researched the term and stumbled across the article “Dreaming together: Artists mobilizing collective dreaming methods for the radical imagination (Capacious)” by Max Haiven. This writing summarized my thoughts on collective dreaming and became the inspiration for my sonic dream, an auditory communal place for healing which mobilizes dreaming as a methodology for fostering radical imagination within collective practice. As Haiven states, the radical imagination is key to the vitality of social movements and transformation of society. This is a mix to accompany and color your radical dreams - in sleep, in travel, at rest, in movement, at home, in public, alone, and with others, “where dreaming is conceived in some sense as a commons: a shared 'resource' for meaning making, discovery and, potentially, resistance.”

Description: 

Panarchy is a systems thinking and ecology concept used to characterize complex systems of people and nature dynamically organized and hierarchically structured within and across scales of space and time. This multidimensional conceptual framework can be used to study the functioning dependency of economic growth and human development on ecosystems and institutions. 

Panarchy consists of an adaptive cycle in a loop of four-phases: growth (r phase), conservation (K phase), release (Ω phase), and reorganization (α phase). In growth, the system expands; in conservation, the system is rigid and stable; in release, or creative destruction, there is a collapse or breakdown; and in reorganization, the system rebuilds and renews itself. The reorganization phase is dominated by the possibility for new futures, new processes to emerge, and the possibility for a system regime shift. 

This theory also emphasizes a “nested hierarchy,” in which smaller systems are nested within larger systems and influence one another in cross-scale interactions. Small systems are fast changing and can have a “revolt” effect that disrupts larger systems (e.g. national politics). Larger systems can have a “remember” effect by influencing how a smaller system reorganizes after collapse (e.g. cultural values influencing how communities rebuild). 

Understanding panarchy helps us recognize that change is not linear progress, but a cyclical, interconnected, and multi-layered process. Ever spiralling upwards and downwards, our systems can be simultaneously growing, resilient, collapsing, and reborn.
