Figure incontournable du hip-hop sud-africain, Ben Sharpa est un électron libre louvoyant entre hip-hop, grime, dubstep et dub. Entre l'héritage classique du hip-hop US et le terrain de jeu accidenté du grime UK, le rappeur producteur vit ses textes conscients voire illuminés, et conçoit sa musique et sa représentation comme un sit in ou un spectacle plus que comme de simples concerts.

La musique de Mat3r, expressive et intense, trouve naturellement sa place entre electronica ambient, abstract hip-hop et électro progressive, non sans rappeler l'univers charnel d'EZ3kiel ou les débuts de Fumuj. Elle évoque ainsi des univers aussi sombres qu'envoûtants, où la lumière dorée vient transpercer les après-midi glacés. De superbes périples sonores où s'entremêlent horloges, jouets mécaniques, sirènes de bateaux, décors de films et rythmes d'usines ou de corps humain.

▶ SQUEAKY LOBSTER
Glitch-hop - Vlek - Belgique
Le homard fait couler beaucoup d'encre avec les sorties successives d'"AMAI #2/4" en 2010 et son fameux EP "Will-O-The-Ship", tous deux produits sur l'excellent label bruxellois Vlek (2011). Ambiance Bollywoodesque, beats tranchants et lignes de basse dantesques se succèdent ici sur fond de guitares 80's, synthé 8bits pour contenter les plus fins limiers en matière de bass music. Son dernier EP "Killing Eleven" est d'ailleurs tout juste sorti des fourneaux et mérite de s'y pencher sérieusement. Squeaky Lobster est un producteur pointu, un voyageur hypercréatif, un tritureur et enchanteur de sons.

Electro dub - Tazart Music - St Étienne
Le stéphanois apporte track après track de nouvelles contributions à l'édifice de l'Electro-Dub. Approche Ethnic, inspiration Hip-Hop et touche Electro, l'univers de Metastaz parle aussi bien à Sir Jean du Peuple de l'Herbe, Miscellaneous de Fumuj ou encore Yarah Bravo, qui ont tous collaboré au dernier opus. Comme le dit l'artiste lui-même, sa musique s'appréhende comme un roman où ses titres sont autant de chapitres qui contiennent leurs propres histoires.

Artiste français de l'écurie Peace Off (Rotator, Monster X, Electric Kettle,...), Julien Guillot aka The Junglechrist a parcouru les raves européennes depuis 2008 suite a sa première sortie vinyle. Musicalement proche des origines jungle du breakcore, Stazma délivre des rafales de snares mêlées d'influence dub, métal, IDM, gabber, enrobées par une production précise et puissante.

L’apocalypse prévue fin 2012 devrait selon certains commentateurs entraîner chez l’Homme de profondes transformations physiques ou spirituelles. Ce phénomène - et sa propre réflexion spirituelle - a nourri Ben Sharpa et l’a porté à imaginer un univers musical mettant au défi l’auditeur de transformer sa propre vie par la force d’une pensée positive et d’actions concrètes.

Parce qu’il entrevoit une œuvre complète dépassant le simple cadre musical, l’artiste sud-africain s’est associé à Pure Solid pour donner corps à un projet audiovisuel nommé Fourth Density Light Show, collision entre hip hop militant, rythmes electro-dub et projections multimedia taillées sur mesure. 4DLS est une étoile noire, un monde sonore lourd et brut d’où sourd une étrange énergie.

Ben Sharpa, et son producteur de longue date Dplanet, partagent depuis toujours la même obsession de repousser à l’extrême les limites du hip hop tout en restant proche de ses racines conscientes fondatrices. Une de leur première collaboration Into the Black (sur le disque Cape Town Beats) fit ainsi dire à la « Queen of dubstep » DJ Mary-Anne Hobbs de la BBC Radio 1 que Ben est « l’un des MC les plus inspirés et agiles du monde » !
L’album B. Sharpa a permis aux deux alchimistes de poursuivre leur expérimentations autour de beats hybrides à 140 bpm, entre hip hop et bass music. Les fondations de 4DLS étaient ainsi posées.

Si la recherche musicale est au centre de son travail de studio, Ben Sharpa est également depuis 2008 et son premier album solo un phénomène de scène qui a convaincu les salles de toute l’Europe et plusieurs festivals prestigieux tels Glastonbury (UK), Dour (BEL), Electron (CH), Paleo (CH), Extrema (NL), Printemps de Bourges et Riddim Collision.
C’est ainsi que 4DLS a été initialement pensé comme une expérience live : Ben Sharpa échantillonne, met en boucle et manipule sa voix et ses textes, Dplanet séquence les beats et crée des effets à partir d’un contrôleur live et de machines fabriquées de ses mains, et SpoOky diffuse des objets visuels multimédia créés sur mesure qui reflètent et élargissent les horizons musicaux.

Par son caractère méditatif, le dub est à la base du son de 4DLS, même s’il est aussi constitué de hip hop pour les valeurs conscientes et militantes, de grime ou d’electro pour l’aspect dansant. Il permet à l’esprit de se concentrer sur le message tandis le corps résonne des rythmes martelés par la batterie et la basse. C’est ce que Ben Sharpa lui-même appelle la Robot Army Music (RAM) : le son engage votre corps, qui devient un instrument réagissant à la musique, les paroles vous (r)éveillent et font de vous un résistant, les images appuient ces deux réverbérations. Et la quatrième dimension de ce 4DLS, c’est votre propre expérience de ces trois premières.

Following the adage that good things come to those who wait, Brussels’ Squeaky Lobster returns to Vlek after nearly two years of silence with a new EP: Killing Eleven.

Having wooed crowds across Europe with his twisted hip hop grooves over the past couple of years, he kicks off 2013 with a half hour of rich and intricate music, a heady blend of saturated samples, rhythms and melodies designed to draw you in for an immersive listen. This immersion takes full sense on the vinyl release which, like 2011’s Will-O-The-Wisp EP, is designed to be listened as if it were a mixtape of old, the EP’s eight tracks spread across two sides of uninterrupted music that once started must be felt through all the way. You strap yourself in and you ride, or else…

Side A sets the tone with a 17-minute ride into the musical mind of Squeaky Lobster from epic strings on the opener to slow, chugging grooves that should come with a neck brace warning, intricate break chops, flying edits, screaming horns, ethereal voices and perfectly chosen samples that guide you on this journey and add the perfect touch to the music’s cinematic feel. 

Over on side B things take a turn for the psychedelic as the grooves stay firmly off the beaten track yet continue to have an irresistible pulling effect on your head and body. Screeching guitars, ethereal melodies and an invitation to rock n’ roll co-exist happily in the mind of Squeaky Lobster and translate here into yet more forward thinking grooves, rhythms and melodies that join the dots between hip hop’s past, present and future. 

The tracklist is merely there as an indicator, a signpost that can be safely ignored in favour of a wild sonic experience. Unlike other artists in the same realm, Squeaky Lobster may not talk much but he sure knows how to let the music speak for itself. After a few listens you may find yourself thinking that Killing Eleven is a direct descendant of the work that people like Prefuse 73 and Shadow started close to 20 years ago. And you wouldn’t be half wrong.           

As for those of you wondering what Killing Eleven is – a mysterious killer, a rite of passage or perhaps a reference to Spinal Tap’s ‘turn it to eleven’ – you’ll have find the answer in your own listening experience. Inhale deep and loose yourself. 

Killing Eleven is released by Vlek Data in January 2013 on 12” vinyl featuring screen-printed sleeves with artwork by Vlek’s Dim Run alongside digital.

Congo Natty aka Rebel MC has a career dating back to his early hit with Double Trouble, "Street Tuff," but is probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle - perhaps the first uniquely UK-born bass music. 

"Jungle Revolution" features the whole of the extended Congo Natty family and was mixed with Adrian Sherwood. Clearly showing this Rasta's belief that Jungle is a re-boot of roots reggae for a new century, the record is full of blood and fire, the sternum-buzz of sub-bass, rapid fire drum breaks, sweet hooks, righteous anger and professions of religious fervour. It’s the kind of passionate, committed, raw and spiritual, beautiful record that doesn’t come along every day.  

To celebrate this release, we are streaming the track "UK Allstars," which features a who's who of British soundsystem culture. This is the first time ever that this line up have all appeared on one track together and so also marks a historic coming together of a scene which lies at the roots of so much of what we now take for granted in UK music, from dubstep to grime to drum & bass and beyond.
