Weird, random thought came to me listening to this was what if we had an Oregon Trail-type survival video game to match the actual reality of resources not made to be fun but brutally realistic, & pressure elected & appointed officials in charge of these departments to use up a vacation day to keep playing it for a full 8 hours just to simulate what that experience is like. We'd need to pay homeless people to share their experiences, what resources really exist, which have let them down, how people have really treated them, to inform the programming. Because what we REALLY need them to do is spend a whole week with the same resources, on the street, in their poorest neighborhood, in bad weather - but they'll never actually agree to do that.

Beatrice and Tracy Rosenthal speak with Annie Powers about how our organizing can meet the moment, with lessons from homeless, landless, and poor people’s movements from the 1930s, 1980s, and today.

Annie Powers is an organizer with Union de Vecinos, the Eastside Local of the Los Angeles Tenants Union, and a scholar of landless people’s political movements in the United States. She studies the history of housing and homelessness, and poor people’s urban land struggle, in the US and the world.

This episode is part of a series in collaboration with Tracy Rosenthal centered around the growing tenants’ movement and their book, co-authored with Leonardo Vilchis, Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis.
