GTG Premiere | Franz Jäger - Bipolar Steel [HPX166]

Morgenstern returns after a long hiatus with Phantom Pulse, a nine-track statement shaped over two years beneath Berlin’s strobelights. Each piece reflects a period of transformation, distilling the energy of countless nights into a focused and personal sound. Three remixes by KaioBarssalos, Noah Tauber and Nihil expand the release with their own distinctive voices. All three have been part of the GTG story, and their return gives this project a special weight. Phantom Pulse closes the year with intent.

For SIDE B’s fourth release, an EP by Portugal’s own DJ Dextro is in line. Ultra efficient, fine tuned techno is put under a microscope by the international mainstay for this record. Using high pressure in the low-end and creative textures to decorate the tracks, Dextro solidifies his place as a mainstay with a biting performance on home turf.

Balancing his uncompromising sound with mystical synth work, Dextro opens ‘Lost Frame’ with the title track. In this A1, he rolls straight into a tunnel with flashing percussion and lurking melodies far out in the stereo field. Dancefloor focused but with a hint of mysticism, ‘Lost Frame’ creates a captivating ambiance to introduce the project with promises of earworm groove. Quick to follow up, ‘Disclosure Of Who We Are’ sees more space between the elements, creating a whipping effect in the rhythm and rich in sound design. Synth stabs cut through a booming kick, creating urgency in an EP that was lacking none to begin with. This spirit is maintained on the record’s flip to the B side - this time with an added bit of funk and shuffle. ‘Liberdade’ throws a vicious synth sequence forward for peaktime use and sees Dextro define his space with concentrated transitions and booming percussive hits. Swinging along with the occasional vocal sample to emphasize the obscurity, the producer maintains his delivery of razor sharp focus in all of his elements. To conclude, ‘Panóplia Abstracta’ settles things with an ambient, even meditative fourth track. Staying insistent with his kick, Dextro lets go of the wheel to drift his record from the body to the mind with progressive arrangement and soothing textures to see off a whirlwind of an EP for SIDE B records.

Sciahri and his label Sublunar are proud to present the second chapter of the “Veil of Echoes” project, a continuation of a journey that connects emerging and established artists from the label.

London based label and radio outfit Seance return for their fifth vinyl and digital exclusive EP, following releases that have included top draw artists lime Edit Select, Subjected, Hironori Takahashi, Flug, TWR72 and a rare appearance from Modern Heads aka Dino Sabatini & Gianluca Meloni.

The Last Empire EP is a superb outing from David Sierra who many will know as David Att of the Attemporal duo. Running the respected ATT Series label, David has also made contributions to Re:Axis’ Monocline Records and HD Substance’s SUB tl for example.

Two remixes are also inside from the always fantastic Arnaud Le Texier who heads up the imprint called Children of Tomorrow, and a back catalogue that has labels like Sven Väth’s Cocoon to Christian Wünsch’s Tsunami Records. Drop-E who is also from Spain brings a new flavour with his rendition following works for Labrynth and PoleGroup sublabel AINE.

The track we selected for this DT:Premiere is lead track “The Last Empire” which is an understated monster. Its chugging groove is super stern with a delicious sub bass swell that packs some serious attitude. Using an analogue grit on the hypnotic lead makes this a destroyer that will wipe out anything in its way…

Dynamic Ukrainian producer Yan Cook makes his debut on Soma Records with the Wide Angle EP. Active on the scene for some time now and releasing on a number of top flight labels, Yan delivers a devastating 4 track EP, chalked full of his distinctive sound. 

The ominous title Wide Angle kicks things off with thumping and tripped out low end and doesnt hold back, firing straight out of the block with rapid percussion and twisted synth elements. Krater keeps up the pace with a more rolling and hypnotic feel; crushing rhythmic elements has Yan on full attack mode with this track. Blacklisted keeps up the aggressive vibes with sinister tones, growling basslines and yet more jarring and propulsive rhythms. Closing out with Red Stream, Yan continues with the malevolent vibes as dark and forbidding tones permeate throughout this perfectly crafted tool.

Yan Cook is yet another welcome addition to the ever growing roster of high quality talent on Soma.
