What an honour to be asked to provide music for the celebration of life for my dear friend and esteemed colleague, Dr Geoff Layton. 

I met Geoff 20 years ago when we worked together in a community mental health team. Geoff was not like most psychiatrist. He was psychodynamic in nature, into art therapy, psychedelics, and open to more ways of being than most people can comprehend. I loved working with him. Sometimes, we would giggle because it looked like he had fallen asleep during team meetings but then he would open his eyes and say something profound, and everyone would go quiet.  One thing I remember most was when a person took their own life, and I didn't cope with it at all, I was broken. Dr Geoff gave me words of wisdom and close care that I will never forget. He was philosophical and spiritual, deep and wise... he said fewer words than most people but the words he spoke had power, and they were filled with love. 

It was really cool to have a friend that crossed both my worlds of mental health and dance music. Dr Geoff was a dearly loved member of the Waitati community and a long-standing member of the Eudemony tribe. It was beautiful to watch him steal the heart of my friend Jo and I nicknamed him Dr Love. How lucky he was that the last few years of his life were bathed in the love of lovely, beautiful, Jo. Everyone stands in love and compassion with Jo and Geoff's sons in his passing. 

This music mix is a gift for them all x It's a whanau effort - Jo, Sas, Rick, Katie, and Ivan have all contributed songs that Geoff liked, and I have included everyone's requests as best I could. 

Fly free on that green comet Geoff x thanks you for everything you gave us and until next time we cross paths.... keep on shining bright my friend x RIP x

She works as a mental health nurse educator in NZ and is interested in the space between music and mental health promotion.
