A lot of dope things happened that night.  This was the height of the DJ being pushed to the for front of Hip Hop.  This was actually recorded at KPFK I believe but we performed it at the Variety Arts Cents show.  That night the Beat Junkies, Xecutioners, DJ Yoshi and many more blazed the tables.

Earlier this year saw the long awaited release of 'Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives', the feature length documentary on what many consider to be the most important radio show ever.

Produced by the duo and directed by Garcia, the film found funds for release via a Kickstarter Campaign way before the campaign's end date in September. And with good reason - this is a story that a lot of us have been wanting to hear told properly for time.

The guy's have been touring the film since, and on Thursday the 15th of October they attended the London premier of the film at the BFI and hung around after to answer some questions from fans. Hosted by Spin Doctor it's about twenty minutes or so and well worth the listen. Even if you don't like hip-hop Stretch's voice is so damn soothing and Bobbito's enthusiasm for life so infectious.

Here's a new trilogy of mixes from the "Diggers Dozen" event that I put on in Brisbane, Australia back in 2014. Each of these themed mixes each feature 12 top-tier records hand picked from the Bulletproof Crates played out live on 2 turntables, mixer and a Kaossilator.

This first mix is the "Ethnic Crate" featuring some off the wall digs dug up in dusty record stores, flea markets & junk shops in the depths of Israel, Lebanon, Japan, Germany, Thailand, Belgium, Australia and of course, the US. Expect some heavy drum breaks with some exotic rock, psych & jazz sounds in the mix.

The next mix in the trilogy will drop week and continue this theme with 12 x 7" 45s.

During our 30+ year history we have become well-known for championing a wide-range of musical genres, but for many people we will forever be associated with the golden age of hip hop and our Soho stores. The memories of the music and culture from that time are intertwined with the experience of being in that store (for customers and staff alike). Mr Bongo founder and MD, Dave Buttle, recalls that heady period in Mr Bongo history…

"It was a really exciting time. Soho was booming - full of media companies, record, stores, labels, and the place to go in London for your vinyl shopping needs. If you had an exclusive new hip hop release in store the word would spread and it would be a roadblock. We are talking the early Rawkus releases, Mos Def, Company Flow, then we had Dr Octagon, exclusive Lord Finesse bits from Japan."

Hip hop will always be in the DNA of Mr Bongo and a couple of years back we decided to channel that into a Mr Bongo Hip Hop 45 reissue series. Our ambition was to release the best and most in demand cuts from the 80’s and 90’s on 7" in original picture sleeves. It’s a collection of our personal favourites, Bongo store anthems and undeniable classics. We kicked the series off with A Tribe Called Quest ‘Scenario’ and we are about to hit release number 20 with the Egyptian Lover ‘Computer Love'. The series has featured artists such as Nas, Souls of Mischief, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Cypress Hill, Gang Starr, Black Sheep - to name a few. The response to these releases has been fantastic - the demand for these cuts is coming in from all around the world and we are very thankful for the support and love they are getting!

To celebrate reaching release number 20 in the series we thought now would be a good time to showcase the catalogue in full. We called in DJ Chris Read to put together an exclusive Mr Bongo Hip Hop 45’s mix. Chris is a long-time collaborator with Bongo, has a deep knowledge of hip hop, and is an incredible DJ. Perfect for this mix. 

"Every track featured in the Bongos Hip Hop 45s reissues series is a certified classic and a high proportion of these records featured heavily in my DJ sets during the 90s and beyond. It was a lot of fun not only to see these records again on 45, but also to revisit them in this mix. 

In the years after I moved back to London in the early 2000s, a record shopping trip to Soho was a regular part of my Saturday routine and a visit to Mr Bongo's Berwick Street store was an essential stop on a circuit that took in stores including Record and Tape Exchange, Major Flavas, Scenario, Deal Real and many others. The space was small, the queue for the counter usually deep and the vibe was often hectic, but the atmosphere was electric. I have no idea how many hours I must have spent flicking through the racks or stood at the counter trying to get a glimpse of the latest arrivals up on the wall, but they were hours well spent, made all the better by the presence of some top class DJs serving from behind the counter.” Chris Read

dL's Bio

I grew up in a house where instead of watching television we would sit around as a family and listen to my dad play records. As a very serious collector he would often take me to record fairs from the age of about 8 years old. You could say an apple never falls far from the tree, except where my father sought out obscure 60's british rock, I seek out good quality music from musicians that played from the heart, be they jazz, soul, reggae, afro, folk or what ever.
I started djing locally in the early 90's in clubs, then progressed to entering and placing in various competitions including DMC and ITF. In around 2001 I started taking the whole dj/record collecting thing a little more seriously which saw me djing in many places around Australia and digging for records all over the world. I have shared stages and warmed up with every one from Gangstarr, MOP, Raekwon, Cut Chemist, P.U.T.S, Short Kut, De La Soul, Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Roc Raida, Rhettmatic, Babu, Dilated Junkies, Dj Krush, Rip One,The Alkaholiks and Lyrics Born through to leading Aussie acts like The Hilltop Hoods,Delta, M-Phazes and Koolism.
Since 2002 I have also started making my own music which has included a long standing association with 7 piece jazz fusion band Sukatash, and the up coming Decades release on CH records. Also check my blog for exclusive funk/soul/hip hop edits.
Some of the mixes I make are recorded straight from the mixer into a tape deck, some are recorded and multi tracked, some are made to make people dance, some are made to make people think, but all are made for every one who has a genuine love of music to enjoy.
